The vet I used to work at used to charge the same for a spay as a neuter and that was something that used to drive me CRAZY. A neuter is so much less invasive, takes much less time, and generally requires a shorter recovery. I actually took my cat somewhere else because they charged too much for the procedure. I've worked at hospitals that charged $400-$600 for the surgery which included an overnight stay, fluids, and blood work.
Our vet suggests labwork but it is optional and at a cost(I think $30.) My younger healthier dogs I don't do it on but I did on Wynn due to his age(8) when he was neutered.
