Hi All,

I'm trying to "plan" out some future training with my 3 month pup after the basics, and I'm wondering if anyone in the San Francisco Bay Area has had luck with finding agility training.  Any recommendations?  Non San Francisco residents are welcome to chime in :)

I'd love to get Jerry started on this both for him and me. From what I've seen, it seems like 6 months is the minimum age.  Any opinions on this?  It also looks like it's quite a costly training course.  Is that the overall experience with these activities?

If not agility, any other favorite activities for your corgis?

Thanks!

I had Livvy in 2-3 obedience classes before agility and actually it was the AKC instructors that suggested I take her. You want your pup to know the basic obedience and then start from there. I believe Liv was about 15 months and she had to have a solid recall to even get her in the class. Getting her used to as many different items used is a good thing but they need to be used gently due to a growing pup. Livvy did not like the class as she was always making sure she knew where all the other dogs were. She did do well though. Here in MN we have an AKC club that has training and that's where I have always gone. Maybe look for an AKC club that has training? Good luck!

We're lucky to have a great obedience club to train at here in Lincoln, NE.  If you can find a club in your area they're usually cheaper than for profits and cheaper yet if you join, but then they expect you to volunteer :)    Things would generally be cheaper here than where you live, but even for here, it is a great deal. 6 weeks of 1 hr per week classes are $80 for non members, less for members.  The greatest deal is buying an activity pass..$40 for membership + $300 for 1 yr pass which entitles you to 2 "free" classes per quarter free Sunday open agility and after 1 yr a key to the bldg so you can use it any time it isn't otherwise in use.

You need to have good obedience skills first.  Sit stay, down stay, off leash control, recall, and be able to get and hold the dogs attention...all around other dogs and distractions. I didn't start Murray in agility until he was about 2 and wish I would have started him sooner, but honestly, he was pretty reactive as a pup and I don't know how far ahead I would have been.  As it is, he's a very high drive crazy Corgi and he's 6 now.  NOBODY has more fun than Murray.

Thanks for the responses, you guys.

Jerry is currently in a puppy obedience class, and I will continue to move forward with some of these obedience classes, as well as work with him off-leash on my own.  I'm also aware that the jumping and leaping associated with true agility is not to be done with corgis until they are at least a year old.

I just got an email from the AKC today about local clubs that offer training, so thanks for the tip on that as well!
