shedding and paw licking
***UPDATE**
i took Baden in the vet today. hes very healthy so thats good news. but, hes having an allergic reaction to the season here in CA so he needs to be on benadril for a few weeks to help with the paw licking. as for shedding he needs more omega fats in his diet so is there a good product that any of u have had success with? or a natural way to get his omega fats?

i know corgis shed a lot but it seems like when ever i pet him clumps of hair just come out and i also noticed hes licking his paws an awful lot lately. maybe its the weather? or the food hes on? i currently feed him Kirkland lamb and rice dog food.

The paw licking could be from seasonal allergies. I fill a spray bottle with equal parts of water and apple cider vinegar and it seems to help the itching. We use a non grain food because the foods with grain in them seem to trigger allergies as well. When we first got Tucker his paws were red, and that went away after switching him to a grain free food.

thank you for the tip. his paws smell so bad (like corn chips) and are always red and inflamed. i knew he was allergic to chicken and the cheaper food that had corn in them so thats why i got the lamb and rice formula but ill look into a food with no grains. any u recommend?

we use natural balance duck and potato, it works for us. Now that it is just Tucker I was thinking of maybe trying Oreijin, or another brand, not sure though. There are lots of food discussions on here, that is for sure!

If he never had a problem with grain-based food before, it's possible that it's a seasonal/environmental allergy rather than a food-based one. Is this the first year that you're in that area during spring? It could be that the local flora is causing an issue.
Regarding the fur, have you done a good deshedding session? Ellie is one of the minority of corgis that doesn't really shed much at any time of the year, but Yuki is a fluffy Eskimo dog that sheds like crazy every spring and autumn. I have to sit and spend a good half hour to an hour with a shedding comb & slicker brush once per week in order to keep the shedding under control. Definitely sit him down for a really good grooming session if you haven't done so already and then see how he looks. If he has any spots that seem to be balding/thinner than usual, then definitely look into figuring out what he might be allergic to in his food or environment & have a chat with his vet.

im glad that u mentioned this as i was also wondering if maybe i wasnt spending enough time to groom him or if it was the new area. this is his first spring here in CA and he may just be getting used to it. its been very warm here for the winter and was told that its not normally like that so maybe that played a role?
for grooming i would do it once a week since i use the furminater and read that its not good to use it every day but i also have a stickler brush that works well on his chest fur since its longer. for the grooming time i would only do 5 minuets as he gets impatient but i will just have to sit him down and take my time

Charlie just sheds a lot naturally since he's a bit fluffy but he does lick his paws in the fall and spring. They turn pink from all the licking but he doesn't do it so much it causes bleeding, sores or hair loss so we leave it be (but check often).
Roxi on the other hand when she first showed signs of seasonal allergies lost clumps of hair.. itched and chewed fur off parts of her body and just was a miserable mess till we got to the doctor and get her tested and setup with a shot. (imagine being coned.. having to deal with creams.. sprays.. bandages.. etc.. poor girl..)
Now she usually gets one hot spot a year that lasts for two weeks of being coned with antibiotics and that's it.. we still give her an extra allergy pill when its real bad but that's better then the first time >/p>
Most vets will start off with the food allergy test.. then move onto the seasonal allergies.. if you think its just seasonal they can give you a number for a doggy allergy person to get tested unless they do it right there then lucky you! :)

wow poor girl! i could only imagine how uncomfortable she must of been :( he has a vet appointment this thursday for his normal routine shots so while im there ill see if i can get a allergy test done for him

If I remember correctly the food one we had to stop all her treats and food and just begin with a very clean food they gave us.. then we slowly introduced other items to her diet till it was determined she wasn't allergic to food. Took a few months.

Once a week we crack open fish oil pills into their food on Saturdays and they get a raw egg mixed in on Sundays :)

I use Wild Alaska salmon oil in Jeli's food. I get it at Petco and it comes in a small pump bottle. Its pricey but it lasts months. She gets one squirt/day with dinner. It seems to really reduce shedding. She is coming up on 15 months and she has never actually blown her coat. I brush her about once or twice a week and she definitely sheds, but not nearly as much as my previous corgi.
