I have a 10-month old corgi whom I feed once a day in the evening. I was wondering if I should feed him once a day in the morning instead. If you feed your corgi once a day, when do you feed him?

Hi Joseph,

Do you have any particular reason for feeding only once a day? It is better to feed smaller meals more often. We feed our active adult Corgis 1/2cup twice a day (breakfast and dinner) ... some people even feed 3x's a day if they're home at lunch.

I have always fed my guys twice a day..they get fed in the morning and again at dinnertime.  24 hours is a long time to go with nothing in your tummy. I find that if they go a long time without eating they start bringing up bile...their tummies are empty.

Agree with the others, once a day is not a good idea, especially with a young growing dog.  Meals are usually 10-12 hrs apart, this you can set up in such a way that it fits your schedule and you can be flexible with that schedule, if your situation demands it.  Years ago everyone fed dogs once a day, but there were a lot of problems with bloat and the consensus became that twice a day worked better and was safer.  This is particularly true when feeding commercial dry kibble, as its volume expands considerably in the stomach.

I used to feed mine 3 times a day but now feed twice. I agree that 2 times per day would be much better for him. I would very hungry and sick to my stomach if I were to only eat once a day.

We used to feed him 3 times a day when he was a puppy. We fed him 1/2 cup each time for a total of 1 1/2 cups. When he turned 6 months, we started feeding him 2 times a day. He would eat his meals initially. Then it got harder. Meal time took 45 minutes. We would have to feed him kibble by kibble. He wouldn't eat his kibbles. We tried other brands. So far he's had Merrick, Orijen, and Instinct. We tried wet food as a topping. We tried raw freeze bits as a topping. That worked for a while, then he wouldn't eat his kibbles. We also tried the 20-minutes-and-it's-gone method. He would not eat his kibbles and we would just take his food away. That didn't work either. He wanted to be hand fed. He went without food for 3 meals (1 1/2 days). Then he started eating dirt. We got really worried.

We discovered just this week that feeding him once a day works well. He would just gobble up his kibbles. I know there are other owners who feed their pups once a day. That's why I created this post.

Thanks everyone for the posts. i will continue to monitor his eating habit. He's 10 months and at 30 pounds, so I don't think he's underweight. We feed him a high-quality diet, so I think feeding him once a day might just be okay. Right now, we feed him around 7 in the evening. I want to know if feeding him in the morning would be better. This way he would be full throughout the day.

If he's #30. I would cut down, probably to a cup per day. My adults eat 2/3-1 cup per day depending on which one. Mine only get warm water, I have never added anything else. they get separate treats.

Joseph, I sympathize with you and appreciate you giving all the additional information.  Your story is not at all uncommon, indeed it I had a dollar for every one I've heard, where people turned themselves inside out to get their dogs to eat, I'd have a good stash of bills.  When dogs stop their fast growth period, they either self-regulate by eating less, or get fat.  Obviously, the ones who eat less will be healthier.

The once a day amount you've settled on is, for now, what he needs.  Try giving him only half of that amount in the evening, so he's still hungry, and offering the rest in the morning.  I would give it three days, never offering more than the set amount and nothing added except a bit of warm water.  If you try this, I would love to hear back from you. During these three days, praise him when he's finished his food.

By the way, another option that works well, if you do not have other animals, is to set out dry kibble alongside a bowl of fresh water and allow the dog to eat when hungry, just as you allow him to drink when thirsty (self feeding).  You simply keep the bowl supplied, he may eat more one day, less another, you don't need to worry about it.  Studies have shown this works best with male dogs than female dogs, as the female dogs tended to overeat :-D

Anna, that's what I did when Wynn was a pup and our big Weimeraner mix was still with us. Neither one overate. It did work very well.

Anna...that method worked well with all my other dogs, except for the 3 corgis I've had.  My first corgi, Arnie and both Max & Katie are the kind that gobble their food like they haven't eaten in a month of Sundays.   It's good to know that even corgis can be like that, corgis will be sharing my life until I'm too old to take care of them or me so now I know that they can also be the self feeding kind.

If it works for you guys with no complications I wouldn't know how to answer your question, just depending on the lifestyle, time of day where he's more active, number of treats received when you're home, etc.    My only worry would be for possible acid buildup on an empty stomach at night or early mornings.    If you find you pup throws up frotty substance middle of the night or early morning it's probably because the stomach if over prepared for new food and nothing in it to digest.

I feed mine twice per day, morning and evening after we ate.   He gets a snack at lunch timem and another one before going to bed to make his tummy happy.   Has been working fine ever since.
