How to make a corgi swallow her pills that won't cost me a finger...
Hi, everyone! Cam was spayed this week and we have to administer her pain pills and antibiotics. She won't eat the food if we mix it in, so we've been doing it by hand. Of course, this is not an easy task. We manage to get it done, but I was wondering if anyone has any tips. We tried to wrap it in food, no dice. It usually involves one person holding her, the other one opening her mouth, dropping it in the back of the throat, keeping her mouth closed, and massaging her throat to make sure she swallows it.

I also do the cheese thing. I roll up 3-4 cheese balls and put the pill in one. I give Shippo a couple cheese balls without the pill first, so he gobbles down the one with the pill after, not suspecting a thing lmao...

I use the canned cheese. Henry had so many pain pills after his knee surgery that he won't eat peanut butter to this day. Each morning he needs to take phenobarbital, and I just put it into a ball of spay cheese, drop it on his breakfast and down it goes. I've found the spray cheese works a lot better than the cheese squares. It seems to adhere or cover them enough. I've only had one or two failures if I use too much or too little...

I got lucky... my husband has a pill crusher, so I crush it up & put it either in peanut butter or banana mush :) She knows no different!

chloe is really bad about not wanting to take her flea pill. its chewable but she just spits it out. she sometimes has a hard time chewing large pieces of anything crunchy because she is missing 3 teeth. i usually crush it up and stir it into some of the sauce from a can of wet food and give it to her on a spoon.

I've ended up using different things for Ein to take pills depending on the pill. There is one pill he took for anti-inflammatory that reminded him of his biscuits, so I would give him a biscuit first during training and then the pill. Some pills I would make a little doggy sandwich out of. I would take the biscuit, some Kong spray and then put the pill on top. Usually it went down right away. However, with some pills, Ein just knew they were there, so he would lick of the peanut butter and leave the pill, or eat the treat and not the pill. Some pills I break down and mix in with peanut butter and a treat, a doggy pate if you will. There was one pill in particular that was horrendous to get him to eat it. I eventually found out that I could put it into some of the beneful wet food and he just gobbled it up.

I always use a pill gun. That way it happens so fast, Didi doesn't know what's going on. I lay her down between my legs, pet her, and when she's relaxed I stick the pill gun in her mouth and *pop* right in the back of her throat. She swallows a few times and looks at me like "What the hell was that?"
That was science happening, dear. Science.

I'm grateful for all the suggestions that my corgi-lovin' friends have offered. Camber now takes her pills with little to no fuss. She's not that jazzed about it, but she gets a small, beefy treat to make her feel better. She's sleeping on the couch as we watch the Final game between the Red Sox and the Rays.

I can certainly sympathise with you. Our Fern has the uncanny ability to gag back any pill, separate it from any treat it is wrapped around or cheek it to spit out later when you aren't looking. My husband is more skilled at getting the pill down her throat than I am. I finally had to mix the capsules with soft food and stir into her kibble. I just have to get lucky with the hard pills. Thankfully Cam probably isn't feeling too much pain from the spay... Allo of our other dogs will unknowingly take any pill if it is wrapped in a treat--just about anything, but not Fern...Good luck to you. I wish I had the secret, but even the vet has trouble with Fern. I'd rather give her a shot than try to jmake her take a pill!.

My little angel can eat a pill out of any type of cheese or food in about 3 seconds and then spit the pill back out on the floor while looking at you like, "more cheese?" So, yah...holding her, prying open her mouth, putting in pill and closing mouth and blowing on her nose is the way I go. Actually, with her monthly heartworm pill she is so used to this now it is really easy and not traumatic at all.

i don't know if you have the answer but when Mochi got spayed and i have to give her pills i couldn't' use anything to have her eat the pill. Just be a Mom, shove the pill as far down into her mouth hold the snout close and blow (softly) on her nose and it will make her lick her nose which makes the swallowing motion. You kinda of have to gauge how far down to shove the pill because sometimes Mochi could spit it back up but then i would just do it again.

I use a product called a piller. Its long like a plastic pen. It has a rubber piece at one end you can place the pill and a plunger at the other so once you get the pill at the back of the throat, you can just press the plunger to release the pill. It works wonders and you don't have to worry about putting your fingers in the dogs mouth. They are only 6 bucks here in NS canada. Let me know if you have trouble finding one because I could hook you up if your interested...=)
