Toys for powerful chewer
Okay, so Penelope is about 8 months old now. Closer to 9 mos. really. She is definitely a chewer, a power chewer. We are having some real problems finding good toys for her. She literally will destroy a toy in 5 minutes. We have 2 kong stuff'ns that have held up well and a kong ball that is still holding up for now. We've gone through 2 wubba's. The first was one of the initial toys she had when we got her, when it was time to replace that one, she ripped opened the second one in 2 weeks. She can't have any plush toys, the most recent we tried lasted less than five minutes. Regular nylabones don't last very long either. She had a nylabone double action chew, by the end of the day, she altered the ends of it...kind of shredded. We still let her have that one with supervision. She had an orka jack, that lasted about 3 or 4 months, but she finally managed to break one "leg" of the jack into two pieces...trashed it. So, last night, we are at petsmart scoping toys b/c we have few left. We bought a loofa dog with a tough canvas covering over it, an orka bone, and a nylabone galileo bone. Loofa dog had a ripped off ear and stuffing on the floor in about 5 minutes; in the trash. Orka bone a ripped piece (still attached, but kind of like a fracture) in about 2 hours (she can still play with that with supervision), and the Galileo bone has some shred marks on one edge. Its not like she is doing this when she is in the kennel or when we are not home, its while she is with us. It is while we play with her and she sits with us in the evening. We frequently check out the toys and then suddenly they are destroyed. It is really hard to find tough chew toys b/c they are so super huge for labs and german shepherds, etc. Penny is just a little corgi! Now that I have given you a complete rundown of her toys that have "worked" and that don't work, does anyone else have this problem? Will she ever chew less aggressively once she isn't so much of a puppy anymore? What kind of toys will be good for her? Thanks for any help!

never thought about that...doesn't he eat all the skin off of it though. I mean is it safe if she does eat some of it? I know Penelope would do that, she tries to eat anything/everything!

Our corgi is a very harsh chewer as well. Havent found too many toys that he cant destroy! I like to shop
at www.planetdog.com. They rate their toys according the to the chewometer 5 out of 5 being the strongest,
those are the only toys we purchase which isnt alot! He has 2 footballs, 2 baseballs, 2 grey balls, 1 orange
ball, 2 green balls, as you can see not really a variety of toys. Lance loves playing fetch, he doesnt mind all
the different colors. His football is his favorite, he can try to chew it but cant because it is so boyant!
The kongs we have had since he was a puppy and they have held up to this day and he is 3 today! The other
toy we have had success with and hasnt destroyed is the waggle by busy buddy, they sell them at target.
You basically put small pieces of treats/food on each end and they have to chew it to get it out, and as they
figure it out they eventually learn to bounce it on the ground and the goodies will come flying out! Corgis
are so smart, but the toy has lasted. So to sum it up the only toys he doesnt destroy are the ones with food!!

I don't have a problem with my corgi but i have the same problem with my aussie, in fact yesterday in the less than 10 minutes it took me to feed my horses I lost a seatbelt in the suburban. We have practically no puppy toys left.

I have the SAME EXACT problem with Emma. I even went to your page to see where you live thinking its possible Emma and Penny are related since they both have a longer muzzle and have the same chewing habits.
Now, I don't have a problem with her chewing -- all dogs chew, its in their nature. My problem is I cannot afford to buy a new toy everyday. Hah.
I too use the planetdog toys. Emma absolutely LOVES the Luna/Cosmos ball. I think its great because its quiet and it bounces really well. We use it in our apartment, at the dog park, at the beach - it comes everywhere with us.
I absolutely cannot buy plushie toys for Emma. It doesn't matter if they're tough canvas or not. I kind of bought her a few things (new bed, some toys, some yummy treats) as a care package when she got spayed. The day she got spayed she destroyed a loofah dog. Nothing stops her.
I don't like to use nylabones because Emma will bite of chunks of it and will eat it. She will eat anything she can chew on - I had to pull string out of her butt from one of those rope toys.
Our obedience trainer said that pressed rawhide bones are fine for them, but I'm not sold on them (for safety reasons) but I do buy them for her occasionally if she's had a particularly stressful or lonely day.

Thanks for the "support" ;o) and the suggestions. We actually do have a planet dog toy, that my husband just told me got a little messed up today. It was a ball that basically was a globe, and Asia is now missing from the ball. I will still look into their other toys and other things suggested as well. I don't mind her chewing either it was just the same as Angela said....a new toy that often gets expensive. I mean we spent about $25 to $30 last night and one toy is in the trash and two are heading there. I can sympathize with the cloth/plush toys. We had our own number two and poly-fil incident as well. We are also on "bed" three. The first was a gift from my aunt a large hole quickly ensued once the zipper was found, a crate pad was a little weak where we cut the tag off and that lasted all of three days, and now if she chews on her new bed it is picked up for a little while. I don't mind so much, but I feel bad when ppl see she has to sleep on a bare floor at night b/c she can't be trusted to not eat it! BTW Angela, Emma is beautiful, I think she resembles Penelope as well. It's still far away, but Penny is from Oklahoma.

Oh yeah, Lance has that ball too, he started on it and I finished it for him so now it just a ball
instead of a globe!

I forgot to add, Emma also tears off all of the fibers on tennis balls, too. She's crazy. Hahaha.

Try the Hurley line. It's made with some crazy superly tough material called Zogoflux or something. They come in a large size and a smaller size (I bought the big one without realizing that there was a smaller one, but the big one is still fine). It bounces unpredictably and I've had it since July and there's no even a single mark in it! I must say it's pretty amazing.
Also, when I realized that my corgi needed super-tough toys, I did some internet searching and found a pretty good website of dog "toy-testers". This is the story of my life.... and in addition to all the toys (and picking up all the fluff from the gutted plushies she has destroyed) we have also chewed our way through about 5 leashes now. I've made the mistake of leaving them where she could get to them or leaving them on her while we've been in the car. There's a toy she's working on right now that's taking at least a little LONGER to get through than normal called Tuffie's found on mydogtoy.com

Duncan has an octopus that he hasn't destroyed yet. They are made out of kevlar, the same stuff bullet proof vests are made of. Most of Duncan other stuff toys are just shells. He destuffs them within hours, if I'm lucky!

Sounds like a normal corgi IMO.
I recommend skipping places like Petsmart to buy toys. I purchase a majority of my toys through PetEdge because you can get lots of toys at a discount and the hard chew toys are a lot cheaper, even if you count in shipping. Lots of plush toys after holidays like Halloween and Christmas go for .50 cents a piece. I will happily purchase them at that price because I know they'll last 5-10 minutes at most and my dogs enjoy unstuffing things and killing the squeaker. I refuse to purchase a plush toy over $2 though and some of the prices they charge for these things is outrageous at regular pet stores! They sell all sorts of name brand products (like Kong) and you can save a bundle ordering through them.
Your dog is going through adolesence (teenage years) and may chew more than she will when she becomes an adult. She may chew the same amount as an adult as she's doing now, hard to say. All dogs are different.
I like the Tuffies toys as well. I have a round frisbee and an octopus toy from them that have yet to be shredded. They love to play tug with me and the Tuffy toys.
Dogs will chew through bones, rip plush toys apart and break other toys. I am happy to provide toys to my dogs because I know this will keep them from chewing on things that they shouldn't be chewing on. I like to provide beef knuckle bones (they are like $2.50 each on PetEdge) and those last for several weeks with my dogs. I love marrow bones because even after they've chewed all the good stuff off the outside and inside I can refill them. They last quite a while too.
I also love the huge rope toys you can get for your dogs. They make great tug toys and are pretty durable. PetEdge also has good prices on all different sizes of rope toys. Try some of the tough chew toys meant for labs and see how Penny likes it. Lots of corgis don't know they were "meant for labs". LOL.
