This may be a silly question...but should all dogs be able to catch? Our two older dogs have no trouble catching treats tossed at them, but with Sidney, he just lets the treat bounce off his forehead! I wonder if it is a matter of age, or does our baby lack depth perception? It's comical in a way, but I can't help but worry a little. He's 16 months old.

Can all your dogs catch treats that are tossed at them?

The way I taught Bailey how to catch was by throwing treats at him. I'd sit nearby and if he didn’t catch it, id pick the treat up (naturally sometiems hed be quicker than I.. Haha), but eventually he caught on. He's a pretty good catcher now and weve even upgraded to a squishy ball. =) If you do it enough, I'm sure Sidney would catch on. =D
however the only thing he wont let me do is put a treat on his nose!!!!! arggh!! =P
My daughter taught SId to do this. It's an amazing thing to behold!
Marley our corgi doesn't catch but she will gobble it up quick off the floor. She loves to play fetch with toys. Our shepherd/hound mix Tessie doesn't get the whole idea of catching food. She will do the same, just let it bounce off her. Zero interest in fetching too.
Boomer is awesome at catching the frisbee. She doesn't listen to any commands but she can catch.. lol
Ein started doing it in the past week. He is 7 months. Maybe try softly tossing a soft ball toward Sidney, if and when she catches it praise her.
ha ha sounds like Mochi.. !! she just lets things hit her and fall on the floor before she gobbles it up..
chloe tries to catch sometimes but usually fails. she seems to be better at catching larger things rather than treats, though most of the time she would just rather let it hit the floor and then go get it.
When you toss these treats do all the dogs get involved? If you have all 3 right there and the 2 older ones are catching but the younger one isn't aggressive at it is because he is low man in the pack and is more submissive. My one male was very submissive. We do the treat toss to get him assertive and when he does we make the biggest deal out of it. Now he is coming out of his shell but he isn't a year old yet so part of it is age. Now my new pup who is only 13 weeks old is way more assertive then the male. Personality differances but you can bring them out of their shell.
I don't throw treats at Ein, but I do throw his toys for him when we play fetch. He can catch, as long as it's within a reasonable distance.
My daughter put the time in with a ball to get Zimm to catch mid air- but he prefers to catch treats. He is VERY good at it. Sunny on the other hand has yet to master it. It's funny- they bounce off Sunny's head and Zim catches them...
That sounds just like Sidney and Bruce!
