My adorable, yet very feisty 11 moth old Domino is going through her first heat cycle. We haven't had many issues with her diapers or much bad behavior. However, she decided one day she would make her own doggy door; so the first day she was pinned after starting her cycle she ripped the entire bottom half of our bathroom door off! Well I showed her the mess she made, and squirted her with the squirt bottle, which she hates (normally I just show it to her and she knows she's done bad). I also put all of her toys out of reach for an hour and wouldn't let her on the couch. I think she knew she had done wrong.

Now we have a dilemma of either buying a new door or making a maintenance report which means good buy deposit.

She hasn't done anything else "extreme" as far as behavior but is there anything I should know? Do other female dogs get this way when they are in heat?

Not that I'm aware of, my Vienna will be six this year and we've experienced 10 heat cycles together. Could she be acting out because she hasn't been getting walks due to the heat? A little "frustrated" may be?
interesting...i dont have any answers for you, ours is only 8 months, but i would hope nothing like this happens to us. maybe she did it out of boredom--that is if shes never been locked up in the bathroom. as for the door...id buy a new one. you could probably find one for cheap--oh, check craigslist! good luck:)
See, that's what I don't understand, she's been pinned in the bathroom before. That's her place when we're both gone and she's never acted out like this before. The only other bad behavior I've ever seen her exhibit is destroying the toilet paper if we leave it where she can reach.
Punishing a dog after the fact serves no purpose. They have no clue why you are doing this. Taking toys away or keeping from their normal places only lets them know YOU are different. Has no lasting benefits unless you catch them in the act. Coming into season can cause many behavior episodes merely because of the driving hormones. You would do yourself a huge favor to get her spayed before she accidently becomes bred or she destroys your home.
Yea, even while I did it I didn't think she would understand why I took away her toys. Maybe if she were a person...

But I'm not sure what to do as far as discipline when the crime has been discovered after the fact. I want her to know when she does bad and understand that I still love her but she has to behave. So what do I do when I come home to find a shredded roll of toilet paper or that she's knocked my hairbrush off the counter (she can because she can jump on the toilet) and chewed its handle to bits?
I agreed, you would be better off spaying her. You greatly reduce the chances of mammary tumors and uterine infections once you spay her. And trust my pyometra isnt a fun thing to go through.
We probably will get her spayed because she was the runt of her litter and I think having puppies would be too difficult on her. She's almost 1 year old and she's still only 20lbs max. But I talked to a vet and they said I have to wait about 2 months after she's finished this cycle before they will do the procedure. Plus it's so expensive! I really want to wait until I have enough money to do it at a good clinic where I know she will be taken care of and provided for medication wise. I just don't know how long that's going to be...
She has a crate that she sleeps in but she looks at me all confused and sad when I tell her to "go kennel" and it's not nighttime.

I'll look into getting her an exercise pen to set up in the living room while we're gone, hopefully that will work better.
We found a cage-like kennel that comes with a pillow for the bottom that is the perfect size for her. She can stand up and turn any which way and she can snuggle down and relax. We just have to make it to Friday until I get paid again.

Thanks for all your advice, I really appreciate the help. :)
They can only take as much of the deposit to fix the door. You'll have to do the math on which one is cheaper.

I did not notice that much a difference with Camber in heat. It's best to catch the dog in the act if you want them to know what they did wrong. She may not be able to put 2+2 together after the fact...
