Walking Shoes...definitely related to owning a Corgi!
Okay, this may seem unrelated to Corgi's, but I think we all know that owning a Corgi means walking, and lots of it!
I walk Grover for a mile in the morning and mile in the evening. During the summer we sometimes do 2 in the evening, depending on the weather. His walking takes place rain or shine...or snow...or ice...you get the picture. He just has to have his walk or he's a TOTAL nut!
So, because I didn't really get a lot of exercise before getting a dog, I just had your run of the mill Nikes, nothing special. Well, almost a year of walking/jogging at least 2 miles a day has made me think I need to invest in a more comfortable walking/jogging shoe. I have hiking boots, they rock. But I want something light weight and comfortable.
Any suggestions? I know many people here walk daily too and have been doing it longer than me. What do you guys look for a in good all-weather, dog-walking-running shoe?

I own 2 pairs of Fitflops sandals and a Fitflop convertiboot for chillier days. They are the most comfiest shoes I have ever owned! So comfy that they are the only shoes that I wear now. I don't care if they really "work out" your legs, all I care is about the comfort and it's making my feet happy! I highly recommend them!

It'll be a good idea to find out what type of pronation you have first, Normal, Over or Under. After that you can pretty much narrow down which brand and what models suits your needs. If you have flat feet like me? prepare to spend a good sum on good shoes, there are not many choices out there :(

You might try Superfeet. They're basically generic "El Cheapo" orthotics. The arch will feel like it's a bit too far back towards your heel -- that's intentional.
I've used Spenco insoles in all my hiking boots for...ew... 30 years? Closed-cell foam about 1/8" thick.
I have several pairs of old hiking boots and yeah they're heavy, but they feel great, have super support and cushioning, weather-resistant, and the extra weight of boots isn't gonna be noticed on a dog walk, unless it's more than 6 hours.
You'll want something cool in warm weather.
I also have heavy-duty boot-brushes bolted into the sidewalk outside the doors.
Quick lacing is important.
Running shoes are good only for running, not walking the dog. I run a lot and I NEVER walk or stand around in my good running shoes, that's not what they're made for.
Find a shoe or boot store with trained salespeople who seem to know what they're doing. Measure your feet. I'm a hiker. Nothing is more important than your footgear. Cheap shoes are a false economy (but I've got good ones at yard sales). Your paws are important.

I've had my trusty New Balance shoes for almost 9 years and they have worn so much that I'm starting to feel the asphalt now when I walk. As much as I love these shoes I think it's time to go back to the Runner's Store. *sigh* I hate to give them up, they have served me so well. We've gone through plenty of 5k runs before my knee finally said "enough" and I retired to corgi walking.
When I do get the new pair, they will be New Balance again. Make sure you go to a store that specializes in fitting runner's shoes, they will help you find just the show you need. A good shoe is worth the price and will last you a lot longer than cheap shoes!

I walk about 12 - 18 miles a week. (still fat - go figure) I have to wear new balance running shoes and I replace them every 6 - 9 months. I go to the new balance store 30 miles away and get fitted by the more experienced sales clerk.
Sam is right - it's best to find out which brand best fit your feet and needs. The wrong shoes can cause serious problems. (especially the older and heavier you are)

I second Aj! Fitflops are amazing! It's hard wearing any other shoe in the summer. In colder months, I always wear ugg boots or fake uggs, just to keep warm and because they are so comfy & easy to slip on. I don't usually run w/Gibson though, so you may need more supportive shoes for that.

bath and body works sells them online (not sure if they do in stores or not), and you can find them on ebay for cheaper. My mom just bought a pair of imitation ones at KMart that she says are the exact same thing and way cheaper!

I live in rural CT, and swear by Keene shoes. They have good support and are incredibly comfy and durable. The strappy ones are wet/dry shoes, too, in case you need to wander into a river (one of my dogs likes to imitate a submarine with her nose as the periscope, but has a tendency to float away on the current given her short paddles and lack of a rudder).

I'm with Susan on the Keenes, they're good for NYC as well as rural wear. My other comfort walking shoe is a Merrell lt hiker. My feet are quite flat so I need good support, I can go all day in either one of these whether its keeping up with a corgi or a bunch of kids. The Keenes come in wacky colors just in case walking a corgi doesn't draw enough attention.

Susan and Lili, I notice the Keen shoes come in sandal and close-toed form. What kinds do you use? Since they sell them at our local sporting-goods store I might wait for the next coupons to come out and get some then, maybe some sandals for summer.
