Hmm, are corgi's water dogs? I've heard mixed things from the people that I know. Some will be like a cat and scratch the living crap out of you and the other just tolerate it.

I put Freya in the tub with me on a whim. I figured at the very least I should get her used to the water. I held her so she wouldn't freak out and she just immediately started to doggy paddle. Sadly, she did far better than our Weim, which is supposed to be a water dog(?) too. I sat her in my lap for a second and she was fine, she wasn't freaking out at all.

I was impressed. Am I lucky or is this normal?

My Rhys loved to swim! He loved to retrieve tennis balls thrown out into a pond. But he didn't enjoy baths and hated the rain.

Andy tolerates the rain, but she doesn't like baths or swimming. I can't get her into a pond or pool.
Baron loves to play in the puddles..after I hose his legs and belly off he plays in the puddle we created. Defeats the purpose of cleaning him off when he plays in the dirty water. Layla will jump off the deck into the pool if we are in there. Meagan likes it but has to be taken in. I think I have my hands full w/Sian. She is such a dare devil..acts sometimes w/o thinking!
Oh yes, Freya is the same way. She has no trouble jumping 3 feet either from my arms or from the bed (loft bed.) But when it comes to stairs she won't budge.
Our Frodo really is not a fan of baths. The first couple baths he had with us were a pretty shaky, but he's gotten more used to it now. When we first adopted him, I used the same technique that you did. I went into the bath with him, to hold him and keep him calm. After a while, I transitioned him to being in the tub by himself. Frodo is much calmer now, and he just kind of stands there and lets me do what I need to do (which makes bath time much quicker...maybe he realized that)
That being said, Frodo LOVES the pool! I first took him in this summer on a particularly steamy day. He was down by the pool with us, and I just felt so bad for him. He's a tricolor, so he just looked like he was boiling under his black fur. I carried him into the pool with me, and at first he was a little shaky and scared. As soon as I dipped his little butt into the water, he got VERY happy. When those legs hit the water, Frodo was paddling immediately. I have to hang on to him, just so he doesn't swim too close the side and rip the liner on the pool. With my hand under his belly as a guide, Frodo loves to swim around. When I took him out after that first swim, he shook off and then scurried right back to the ladder, wanting to be brought in again!! Ever since then, I cannot go for a swim without a little Corgi companion.
Like Bonny said, though, it would vary with each dog. I agree that a lot of it has to do with introduction. I can see how a pool, or even a tub, could seem REALLY scary to a little Corgi! Having you there to keep them safe probably makes a big difference.
I hope it works out like that for me! I'm going to give Freya her first bath soon...since I never bathed her when I got her.

Wish me luck!
My parents Pembroke LOVES to swim and will swim in any body of water. He swims in the ocean in FL which is not too rough, lakes, rivers anything. He is a good swimmer and goes over his head all the time. Our Cardigan has not gotten the hang yet but we hope she might at my sister's pond go in some time. She watches the other dogs doing it so maybe she will get brave enough someday. (I have some shots of my parents dog swimming on my page)
Aaw, I'm sure with time she will learn. Our Weimaraner was scared peeless when it came to swimming. It took us going to the dog park for him to at least run across the water and kind of waddle. He still hates it though.
Penny likes the water, but will not go in if she feels pressured. You just have to let her go at her own pace. Once she warms up to the water she swims little corgi laps. It's pretty cute. At the dog park she wanted to get in, but there were too many other dogs and people around so she chickened out. That's ok though.

I love this picture cause you can see the little paws moving - so cute ; )
Marley loves to swim but she isn't a fan of baths...but I think that is because she has to stand still and she isn't a fan of that either :)
Shippo likes to chase water and get thoroughly soaked. He still doesn't like baths though.

Mostly he likes standing in the water:

Both mine don't like it when the water is really choppy. The waves scare them. We try to go on calm beach days. They like it when I stand in the water with them swimming around in it.

I don't have a pool so I have no idea what they'd do with that. Some corgis love swimming and others could care less.
