So I have a question. Freya used to be potty trained and at 5 months she still pees in her kennel, she was doing really great. Lately, she has gone on a downward slope and it is driving us crazy. We have a doggy door. She knows how to go out and in it with no problems. But sometimes, I still find her peeing on the floor and occasionally she will poop on the floor (especially if it is raining outside.)

We leave her free as soon as we get home as we think it isn't fair for any dog to be kenneled more than our work ours make them be. So she's freed the entire night and the entire day if we are off.

What can I do? Do I need to start kenneling her at night too? It doesn't matter if we are where she can reach us. She will go in the hall way and use it.

uh oh! i know its pretty common for dogs not to want to voluntarily go outside and use the restroom when it has rained or it's still dewy out. my parent's cocker spaniel does this all the time :( i even remember my yorkie doing this but she was just stuck up. lol. i would really go back through the motions of potty training again (taking them to a specific spot and telling them to "do their business" or something along those lines and rewarding them a lot when they do.) perhaps something derailed her from her usual bathroom detail. it couldn't hurt :) also you might want to limit their food/water intake in the evening so that they she won't have the urgency to go in the middle of the night. i mean, do you drink a whole gallon of water just before bed? lol. we live in an apartment and have to take ein out just before bed so that he'll have an empty bladder. that way he won't have any accidents in the middle of the night or in the early morning. its definitely been working for us. if we have to leave him alone in the house for an extended amount of time (anything over 3 or 4 hours) i limit his water intake and take him out before i leave. hope this helps!!!
try getting bells to hang from your front door or whatever door you take the dog out to potty through normally. you can train the dog to hit its nose on the bells to make a noise when it wants to go outside! im working on it with my corgi now and he's used it quite a bit sofar. :D
make the bells jingle and then try to get your pup to hit them, praise, go outside and reward. you can try it several times, they should get the hang of it. they sell cute little door hanging bells just for that reason at a store called Best Friends puppy boutique i like to visit in the mall.

I was also wondering if anyone knew what age you can stop putting your pup in the crate overnight at? i know he's not fully house broken yet, he wee's at the door if he has to wait too long for me to get there.. arg.. but whenever that stops, how will i know when he's ready for the 'big night out'??
Go look at my potty training 101 under FAQ I think this will explain your issue.
I'm guessing, Freya will have to restart her potty training, just not sure how to incorporate the doggy door.

As of late, she hasn't had much trouble. I need to find all the hidden spots (if there are any) and clean it hard core. I'm sure I'll be on potty duty for a while...especially with the foster coming soon. I need to buy more Hydrogen Peroxide and Odoban too.
The bells worked wonders for Rocky. He would just wander by the door and if you weren't right there you would miss his signal and he'd make a mess on the floor. I was beginning to think we'd never get him housetrained. I had the bells up for Rosie but I guess I must have thought he was too young to use them. I finally decided to teach him to use the bells. First you ring them when you are ready to take him out and say "let's go outside" like it's the most thrilling thing on earth. Once you are sure he's not afraid of the bells you can take his head in your hands and gently bang the bells with his nose saying "outside" and telling him what a brilliant dog he is. It didn't take more than a week before Rocky was ringing away to go out. He isn't a very vocal guy unless he's on "guard duty" so the bells were just what he needed. I should hang some outside because he doesn't bark to come in and has been known to sit out on the very cold concrete porch in the dead of winter waiting to come in. We did buy a cheap area rug to put on the porch so he didn't have to sit on the concrete. He's a goof!! Rosie will bark the house down to come in so when her shoulder is healed, she will take care of him getting in the house. We have a dog door but in the cold Iowa winter, it is not used. Brrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rocky loves the doggy door. He does ring just to go out and play but after the first time or two of me not answering the bell, if he really needs to go out, the ringing gets a more frantic tone to it than if he just wants to go out to play. You learn to recognize the sound just like the different cries of your human babies.
Excellent advice on the bells, I think. I made some for our last Corgi girl, and we bought some at PetLand http://www.poochie-pets.net/ for this baby girl :::coming soon::: I will post our experience with bells once we get started. :)

I bought mine at Walmart in the Christmas department. They are a string of 5 brass type bells meant to be hung on the door at Christmas time. We made some for my sister in law's cocker pup by just getting some big jingle bells, 4 or 5, and hanging them from yard. We knotted the yarn at the top at a good length for the pup and hung it over the door knob. Worked great for the cocker pup and when we visited there this past winter, my 2 didn't hesitate to use them.
Yes, I agree with Karen, any sleigh-style bells will work. I have posted a video of my 10-week-old Corgi girl using them here:

http://mycorgi.com/video/teggie-rings-the-bells-to-go

To teach her how, each time we took her outside on her leash, we said "outside" and lifted her little paws up in the air and rang the bells. Two days later, she was doing it all by herself when she needed to go outside to potty.

Hope this helps,
Christiane and Tegwen
I tried to train my corgi, Buffy, to ring the bell to go out. The noise from the bell scared her to death! She would shrink away from the bell like we were trying to put her little food in fire! So I gave up on that! I just regularly take everybody out. While we were toilet training I went out with them and said "go potty" whenever they went. Now they know if I am in a hurry and go on command.
As far as the doggy door goes, I think you might have to start from scratch just taking her out on your own. We started out saying "go potty" when he would poo or pee. Now we are at the point that we can say "go potty" and he goes. Sometimes he just lifts his leg and pretends to go if he really doesn't have to! :)
Then, once you have the peeing and pooing outside thing down, then you can incorporate the door. We didn't even begin to teach Grover how to ask to go out until he understood that pottying inside was a no go.
He then just naturally started lightly scratching at our back sliding glass door when he wanted to go out.
We also just took Grover out every so often, like at least once every hour to start with. Since Freya is older, you might not have to do that, but it might help. Just giving her every opportunity to be outside when she has to go.
And we crated at night until we had this down. He was able to start staying out all night at about 7months old. So you might crate at night for a while until you have this part under control!
Good luck!!! I know it's a frustrating process sometimes!!!
I think I'll have to do this. Though at the moment she is doing a lot better. She did get smart and figured out how to jump up and get to the water I left on the food bins. She's terribly smart sometimes. :D./
