Does anyone have opinions or expertise about a strictly raw diet verses raw mixed with kibble? I'm really loving Dr. Pitcairn's book Natural Health for Dogs and Cats so I on the raw food boat. I'm feeding raw veggies and meat mixed with a portion of Dodge's Innova puppy kibble. I've heard that it may not be good to continue to mix kibble with a raw foods diet once the transition is made to one or the other?
Some argue that it's bad to mix the kibble and raw. The resons being:
Their digestive tracts are MUCH shorter than ours, which is part of what makes the bacteria in the meat a non-issue. It passes through quickly and their bodies are designed to handle it.
Kibble is harder to digest and therefore moves through the tract much slower. So the argument being that if you mix it, the kibble will slow down the process of the raw meat moving, therefore making bacteria an issue.
I know people who have gone raw coly turkey (no pun intended) and done fine, and I know people who mix raw with kibble (as I have) with zero issues.
I have yet to find a single good book on true raw feeding. rawfeddogs.net is a good site to learn more information if that's what you're looking for, though. I also highly suggest http://www.skylarzack.com/rawfeeding.htm
This weekend I switched my corgis to wellness. I got sick and tired of Nutro having problems. In the past year they have had 4 problems with their dog food. The first was the dog scare and the next three times was because they had problem with their grain. It was great that they did not make the dog food from the bad grain but then you could not obtain the dog food. What a pain! Why didn't they find better producers of their grain??
Yeah I just switched Jackson from his Mcdonalds-grade food that his previous owner had him on to Wellness and in just a few days I can already tell a difference in his coat!
I will be introducing him to Canidae at some point as well to see which I prefer.
I tried feeding my puppy Nutro Ultra. She hated it. I now feed her Science Diet puppy and she loves it. I know it's not as healthy as some of the other foods, but I am happy we found something she actually likes to eat.
Kyoshi started on Purina One and Beneful before I woke up and got off the mainstream crap. He was eating Evo small bites and California Natural small bites for a long while(Cali Nat is one of his all time faves) but he started having weird eating habits where sometimes he would only eat once a day, if that. We tried a couple other brands(Prairie/Cali Natural Chicken+rice) and it wasn't really agreeing with his stomach.
Now he's on Nutro Natural Choice Lamb+Rice and he eats it as soon as I put the bowl down, which he hadn't doen since he was a small puppy. His poop is healthy and solid and his coat is still as soft and shiny as its always been. I know there has been issues with Nutro in the past, but since Kyoshi seems to be fine with it, I'm gonna stick with that for the time being.
I've been following this thread for some time now, reading dogfoodanalysis.com, etc. and I feel like I've gotten a pretty good foundation for dog food nutrition! I don't have a corgi (or any dog) right now but in all likelihood I will be rescuing a dog who is healing from an injury. She is being fed a food called "Bil Jac" right now that according to dogfoodanalysis and just reading the ingredients doesn't sound too good.. I want to feed her a better food but worry about the high calorie content they might have since she can't really exercise all that much yet. She came in to rescue on valentine's day almost starved to death so they have been trying to get her to gain weight- so I'm nervous to put her on weight control food, too.
We feed Talula Innova Puppy (and our cats get Innova light.) Years ago when my 1st cat was getting urinary tract infections, the vet recommended I switch from Iams to Science Diet because it had something to do with the ph content in the food. I was living in Seattle at the time and when he finished the 1st bag from the vet I went into a small pet store and asked for it. As soon as I asked for Science Diet I was lectured about how bad it is for animals and that they only sold human grade food at that store. I argued that the vet recommended this food for his urinary tract and she gave me samples of Felidae to try (which contained cranberry extract). Anyway, ever since that incident (even though I didn't really like being lectured), I have been a strong supporter of the human grade pet food and have been feeding them Innova and Canidae, although the makers of Innova make other brands like California Naturals.
I really struggle with dog food. I really really just want to feed him a raw diet, but since I don't live with him, I can't. I wish I could find the perfect dog food, but it's hard. The whole idea of "chicken meal" or "beef meal" creeps me out, because it's not even for human consumption and can contain fur, feathers, bone, etc. I feel horrible feeding Winston that crap! I've been researching Hills Science diet and some of that Blue Buffalo and Orijen stuff, but they all seem to contain some sort of meat meal. Does anyone know anything that has no meat meals?
