New to the Corgi - Whining and Crates and Housebreaking

Hey all-

First of all, we can't thank you all enough. Prior to getting Davey we spent a lot of time on the boards getting very useful information about the breed. Thanks. That said, we just brought Davey home and he is eight weeks old. He is rather vocal at night in his crate, which we keep in our bedroom. Any tips or suggestions on how to get him to, well, be less vocal/whiny? He normally calms down after about 30 minutes but then will start again in a few hours. I guess this is typical?

We also have been having some problems getting Davey used to using the sidewalk/planters for potty breaks. He is used to grass and now he lives with us in Manhattan and he seems reluctant to go potty outside during walks. Now our hardwood floors, well those he likes! How long should we expect to work on housebreaking? And any suggestions are very welcomed.

We are smitten with our Pembroke!

I would say that 99% of puppies are very vocal when they first go to a new home. Most of them are being separated from their pack for the first time and are scared and lonely. The most important thing to remember is not to give in to the whining, even though it's heartbreaking. He will stop in a few days/weeks when he finds out it doesn't work, but if you give in and take him out, he will never stop. I have a friend with a 6 month old dog who still cries LOUDLY in her crate for HOURS every night because eventually she will get let out!

The best thing I did when I got my first puppy was to buy a puppy book. All of the advice was super helpful. Puppy kindergarten is also excellent for first time puppy parents. I think you learn more than the dog!! Good luck and keep us updated! =)
I love your puppies mismark!! Phantom of the Opera for sure! I agree on the crate training, you just have to wait him out. Make it a nice place with treats and stuff. Potty training is a trial with any puppy but a regular schedule works the best. The first week or so it is important to avoid accidents as much as possible by taking him out a lot. I always say "go potty" the second he starts to go then later your dog will go on command. A great idea when your out in the cold and/or rain with a dog on a leash waiting for it to happen! Good luck with your adorable puppy.
With new puppies they just need the get used to the new space and being alone. The hardest part is letting him self soothe. As long as you're taking him out regularly for bathroom breaks, just let him whine. Eventually he will stop. It also help to give him treats in his crate or even some of his kibble. He will associate the crate as a good place.

With regards to potty training, as soon as Davey starts to do his biz in you apt. pick him up and run him outside or to where ever you want him to go. I know this is much harder in a Manattan apt. but maybe instead of running him outside you can paper train him? There is one other alternative since he already likes grass

What worked for us with the kennel was to give a treat when she went in at night and then to cover the whole kennel with a blanket. Shuts out noise and light and makes it more like a den for them. It seemed to really help in our case.
I definitly agree with Ginny- When Beckett was a puppy we covered the crate with a blanket to give it that Bird Cage kind of feel- and he was quiet almost immediately.
You can put one of your old T-shirt in the crate with him at night, the scent of your will calm him down, you can also wrap a cheap ticking clock, that mimics the beating heart of the mama dog.

As far as housebreaking goes, it takes 9 months to 1 yr to be fully accident free, read the FAQ section, be patient, set good schedule and repeat. Good luck!
