Seriously, what's up with this?! My dog must be crazy. Isn't fetch supposed to be something that dogs all love to do?

Well my puppy just likes to run away with whatever you throw for her. Her favorite game is chase!

Does anyone else have a dog that doesn't like to play fetch?

Maybe she just hasn't caught on to the game yet. Finn will bring the toy back but getting him to drop it is another story. He likes being chased too or having you grab the toy inhis mouth and tug on it. She'll get it soon enough. Try using treats to show her that bringing it back means getting a treat. Good luck!
Sadie does that, she is a tease when it comes to giving a toy back. She will go run and get it and then bring it back close enough to you but keep it within her paws and chew on it. If you don't attempt to play and tug it away from her, she will sit there and give you the cutest "puppy eyes" until you play. But she definitly does not drop it yet.
Atlas does the same thing. He'll bring it back until he's about three feet from me, and then basically gives me a look that says "go on, try and get it from me!" I have to ignore him for him to drop it.
Scout has helped this though because she's so fast she'll just take it right from his mouth and bring it over to me.
Yep. Same here.
Brody too. Lilly however will bring it right to me. If it's not close enough I just say "bring it" and she'll toss it at me feel. She will keep going all night!
i think fetch is a fun way to teach drop it. If you practice it seperately and as a part of the game, you can get them to play fetch a little better.
That being said, didi only plays fetch when she wants. I throw something and she'll race over, jab it with her nose and look at me like, "Ok, come get it and throw it to me again." Then I usually watch tv until she brings it over, or comes w/o it for tv time pettings.
My dog, Sparty, loves fetch. He even taught my grandson before he was walking to shove the ball ahead for Sparty to retrieve. He will drop the ball down the stairs to chase it if we refuse to play. Buffy, always saw fetch as an opportunity to chase the ball and then watch us come and get it. She never could figure out why she should bring it back to us after we threw it away! Izzy, will fetch usually but not as enthusiastically unless it is clear that Sparty wants to do it. So I guess not all dogs get it naturally. I would be careful about playing the chase game. Unfortunately it reinforces a possibly dangerous behavior. You can turn it around by running backwards away from her and calling her name. That might get her to enjoy bringing it to you.
Rexx (mutt) is hilarious he will walk of with the ball. I seriously do not know where LO got his skills from because he cannot get enough of fetch, and I don't even remember teaching him, he just got it.
Ha! You have discovered Charlie's favorite game too! He is 6 years old and has never liked fetch. He would much rather play keep away. Our sheltie is obsessed with fetch and almost always gets the ball - Charlie has more fun herding him and will bring the ball back every once in a while.
I think this is a Corgi thing, I know so many who refuse to fetch. I always tell people that Bertie only "fetches" in the confines of the house, where no one can see him -- but outside, it's beneath him as a herding dog. So he herds the ball or frisbee, then lies down and chews on it. Or, as he did today, barks and expects ME to walk over to where he is and throw it again. We are the joke of the dog park, let me tell you, but we have a good time! Bertie even wrote this blog because he trained me so well and just had to share -- sounds like your guy is training you in the "come" command he writes about.
Not all dogs like to fetch. Duncan didn't start fetching until he was about a year old. Then, it was getting him to give it up. I really can't tell you how the fetching came about, it just sorta happened. Now, with my husband, they have a different time of fetch. He'll toss the toy, Duncan brings in back and drops it on the ground. Then Duncan acts like he isn't paying attention and waits for my husband to reach down to grab the toy. Then he'll grab it.....or put his paw on it so my husband can't get it. Wish I could tell you how we did it.
Leo plays like Duncan..his thing is to make you think you can get it then grab and run around. He loves for me to throw his ball and he goes right after it. Sometimes he brings it back and teases me with it or goes into a frap. We play this way every day and he has 3 balls just the same so I can throw another for him to get. Puts a kink into his come and get it from me thing.
