what would you do if you were at the dog park and your dog....

started humping another dog? Our 1 1/2 year old female corgi rescue mix was spade several months ago. A few times, I have seen her humping specific dogs. I had her on a long lead when we were at the dog park and I pulled her down and got her away from that dog. I know that it's a dominance thing. It seems to be only smaller dogs. What should I do if I have her off leash at the dog park and I see her humping another dog? Is it considered anti-social behavior? Should I try to redirect or reprimand her? I don't want people to see us coming and leave the park!

We went to the dog park today, and some really sweet dogs were there. Bertie singled out the 9 month old bearded collie and an elderly lab for his attentions. I told him to leave it and he did, reluctantly. The owners thought it was pretty funny, how he zeroes in on the dogs least likely to give him a "go away" snap. So laughs all around. I think just being attentive to what's normal behavior is really all anyone can ask for. (Ethel then enticed the collie puppy away and got to be chased at top speed for about 20 minutes, so at least one of us left the park happy.)

Izzy loves to find some one at the dog park to chase her! Sparty just ignores every body so that he can sniff and pee on every bush and weed. We don't go too often because the park here is not very big.

Oh, so does Ethel! She is in heaven when being chased -- she reminds me of that one guy (Ian Charleson) in that old movie, Chariots of Fire (don't look now, my age is showing), who, when he's running a race, throws his head way back, and just looks full of joy. She looks just the same. Bertie likes to referee, hump the innocent, and check with other dog owners for cookie possibilities. He's a businessman at heart.

Great question!! I am not a big fan of dog parks myself just because you just never know, and I am a very cautious person. Alot of people go to dog parks and are fine, which is great. We have a dog in our neighborhood that Lance likes to play with and it seems like they are always out so at the end of our walk, we usually go over to the neighbors and let the dogs play. Unfortunately, I have this problem with my dog doing this to my neignbors dog and it REALLY bothers me!! I am constantly watching him so that I can stop him immediately with a NO, stop that!! It doesnt help that my neighbors dog doesnt seem to mind at all. : ( So you are right in redirecting the behvior so your dog stops. While at my neighbors last night after the third time of correcting him, I put him on a leash and made him sit by me, next time when it happens the first time, I am going to put him on a leash for a little bit and hopefully will make him stop! I really dont want him doing this to the wrong dog and getting himself hurt!

The really wierd thing is that when Lance was a pup my sisters pug who is only a couple months younger than our dog, starting doing this to Lance first. He didnt like it one bit, he would go and hide and get away!!! I hear that they do this for dominance? I am hoping that he will stop this, because he really loves playing with other dogs and it would be really nice not to have to worry about this!
