So for a while now my Corgi pup Sir Mac Kellen who is 6.5 months old has been doing something a bit crazy. Every so often even if he's just laying still he goes after his hips and leg and just gnaws on them. Like the entire leg in his mouth sort of deal. I know that if I go over to him and just start to message them for a few minutes he seems to stop this behavior leading me to think that he's doing this cause they hurt and they're growing. Anyone else ever seen this before?
With my last dog having severe hip dysplasia as a puppy I have been somewhat leery of these sorts of behaviors.

Does he limp at all?
Could also be allergy related. Does he do anything else such as rub his face on the ground or get a lot of nasty eye boogies?
I've only seen him rub his face on the ground once, and went over and found a dead mouse laying there, and no eye boogies Oo
Midas did that and still does it from time to time. It got so bad that he had chewed til he bled. So we took him to the vet and they spent 5 min looking over his skin and said it looked great other than his open wounds. The vet said it must be contact allergies and gave him some meds. Didn't seem to help but he has slowed down on chewing himself. Now if he does chew we just tell him no and he stops. It could also be food quality related problem. What type of food do you have him on? I'm sure you have checked for fleas but they can be hard to see. Good luck, keep us posted!
We have him on Royal Canin Medium Dog food, so I'm hoping its not a quality problem there! Fleas could be it, but wouldn't the whole house have them by now? And what does one look for when looking for fleas?
My friend's Black Lab will chew his ankles until they bleed and the vet said it is allergies. There isn't a whole lot they can do about it. Once in a while he will get a Benadryl and if he has open wounds he gets steroids but that's about it. Is there corn, soy or wheat in the food you feed him or in any of his treats?
When looking for fleas, you should look at the lightest part of the dog, (ie his tummy where he will be lighter in colour) and see if there are any dark fleas there, they should be easy to see. If you walk him outside I would treat him and the house anyway, now that the warmer weather is here, the fleas are breeding and they just love a furry dog!
Charlie does this certain times of the year and he has allergies. He just started this week and has made a hot spot on the inside of his hind leg. This is the earliest he has ever started chewing. He usually doesn't start until june. My allergies have been on overdrive this week as well.

He might be allergic to fleas. All it takes is one flea bite to make them itch like crazy. (the flea saliva causes the reaction)
Our Weim broke out in staph infection because of food allergies and the fleas biting him. I'm not sure what's in your dog's food...but he could very well be allergic to something in it. Our Weim is allergic to turkey, corn, rabbit, yeast, and beets. He started exhibiting allergy problems around 6 months.

Is the skin pink at all (not just the place that he's chewing)? If so, that could be allergies. It may benefit him to switch foods to see if it helps any. Avoderm is a good brand and will help get his skin back to normal...also anything with fish will help...like Blue Buffalo. Good luck!
My dog too has hip dysplasia as a puppy although he had all the breeder papers that said he didnt have it..Vet thinks its slight and is treatable by medication (rymadel, Vit E and Glucosomine) and diet. Breeder thinks its just diet and rest for a while that will help. How is your dog now?
Winsday has done that in the past,
i would just be walking her and she would sit down and start
gnawing. Her only problem was being itchy though. Try and
see if there is an irritation befour you get worried.
Hope this might help!!
Do you use the flea stuff that goes between the shoulder blades? The pill does not kill them immediately. Some dogs are highly sensitive and only one little flea visit will be a real problem. Your vet should be able to tell you if the hips are a problem.
Our first corgi, Siri, would chew sores in her skin near her hips/butt. This stopped when my wife switched her from kibble to all raw meat. Don't know what kind of kibble, but I think it contained wheat & other grains. My recollection of the details is sketchy, but I believe this was at about 6 months of age, at least during her first year.
Grains are allegedly a common dietary allergen for dogs.
How's this going nowadays?
