Fireworks
So, I'd really like to take Hannah out with me to watch the fireworks, but since she's still a pup and has never experienced anything like that, I'm wondering if it would be a bad idea. I don't want her to be terrified the entire time. What are your thoughts? Do I go ahead and give it a try or perhaps just wait until she's a bit older?

under the official blog on the main page, it says you should keep your dogs inside on the fourth of july as the loud noises may startle them. You may want to read over it as well, it is interesting. I know alot of corgis are noise reactive. Our corgi is 3 1/2 and he when he heard the noises from the fireworks tonight, (we were in the house) he was running at us barking alerting us to the noise!! He didnt seem as bothered by them when he was younger but he definatley gets a bit worked up now, but not too bad.

If your dog can hear 10 times better than you, and you hold your ears during some of those bangs....think about it!!!!!

I would not take him. It would be a nightmare if he got scared, bolted away from you and got lost in the crowds. We live far enough away to not really get the noise from fireworks, but my dogs get really scared at thunder. They pant really fast, shiver and try to hide.

I think I would leave her at home in a safe place. If you're talking about just taking her right outside your house then you could try it and see how she reacts since you could just put her right back inside if she's uncomfortable, but if you mean actually taking her to some other place I wouldn't, because if she doesn't like it, you're stuck. Every dog is different with loud noises. My first dog hated thunder, fireworks, whatever. She would shake and sit under the table the whole night. Dax, on the other hand, when it thunders, he stops, looks around, growls a little bit, then looks at me with a huge smile on his face. Not scared at all. He's been through fireworks before and he does the same thing, though I've never actually taken him out with me. Nothing really seems to scare him as far as loud noises go, he's just alert. I have a friend whose dog will hide in the bathtub (weird, I know, but it seems to always be the bathtub) during a storm or fireworks.
Overall, it's best to leave her inside and at home. If you're leaving, you may want to put her in a crate or just a small room like a bathroom with her favorite toys and a bed. If she doesn't like the sound, she'll feel better in a smaller space.

Ah, fireworks! They are beautiful, but most dogs (even dogs that are not sound-reactive) don't like them. There is a large fireworks display directly across the street from my house each year, and we actually boarded Jack so he would not be here. They hurt my ears, so I can't imagine what they'd do to him. Some stories:
Our neighbor, after last week's display, said "Did you see the dog running up the street during the fireworks? He must have got loose."
A gentleman who lives about a block from us has a friendly and calm Shih Tzu. He had his dog on the porch, and when the show started, he said it broke through his screen in a mad effort to get back in the house.
The trainer who runs our Therapy Dog group (and probably should have known better) said that they were at an event with fireworks, and her Sidney heard the first bang and took off. She almost lost the end of his leash (he's a setter/ cattle dog mix, and quite big) and he ran and cowered under a truck. Sidney is a therapy dog and does doggie dancing, so he is used to all sorts of noises, commotions, and surprises.
So, fireworks + dog = disaster. It's one outing your dog would rather not enjoy with you. :-)

It will be VERY bad idea.
Last night our local park had fireworks and we took Shiro outside to watch. He was terrified and ran home as fast as he could. Good thing we were right outside. He ran under the couch and stayed there the entire time. He's totally fine now, like nothing ever happened, but if we had to stay for longer I think it wouldn't end good.
It is really a bad experience to them. Just think about what it feels like. Very loud explosions and they don't know what's going on, maybe the world is ending?

they had some fireworks down the street from me and i went out to the end of my driveway to watch them and i brought harley out with me and he went totally nuts. he was on his leash and went around me in circles. he hated them and i would not put him thru that again. he was so nervous the next day he threw up.

They started around us last night. Luckily Sami never made a peep. But then tonight may be a different story. Shortly after getting her we had an actual thunder storm, they are rare here, and I am terrified of thunder have been all my life. But trooper that I am (yeah right) anyway I took Sami out on the patio and kept my fear in check and acted like it was no big deal. Now she just ignores thunder. We will try the same thing with fireworks act as if it is normal thing. Will also have her kong filled with peanut butter ready and waiting just in case. We would not take her to any display though, they need to feel they can hide some where safe and home should always be a safest place.

Little firecrackers like the kids shoot off (even the ones that go into the air and explode in pretty colors) are not bad and are usually tolerated by dogs that don't have noise phobias.
Professional fireworks are very loud. They hurt my ears. A dog's ears are much more sensitive. I believe their reaction is a pain response, as much a fear. I would not subject my dog to professional fireworks at close range. Desensitization and positive reinforcement can help a dog deal with the smaller ones.
If they make a popping sound, like a shotgun, they should be ok. Anything that booms like a cannon is probably not going to be tolerated by a dog. Like I said, I believe it hurts their eardrums.
