Wobenzym
I was going to talk about this in my other discussion regarding Finnigan's hip pain but decided it should have a discussion all it's own since Wobenzym supposedly helps all types of ailments, not just joint pain. I had never heard of this product until my brother suggested I give it to Finn. He said he gave it to his older Lab and he saw a noticeable difference in her. I don't want to overload Finnigan with supplements for fear it may have an adverse effect (he's already on joint supplements) but I want to do whatever I can do slow the onset of arthritis and deterioration of his hips.
I did some research online and found this article. It's a lengthy article but very interesting. I'm still debating giving it to Finn but I was curious if anyone else has heard of this.
I would check with our vet before administering it to be sure it won't interact with his regular supplements and to be sure that all of these supplements are ok to give a one year old dog, but from this article as well as others I found online, it sounds like there are many benifits to be had from taking systemic enzymes for people, dogs and other animals.

Medizym-Fido (similar systemic enzyme for dogs)
Medizym (similar systemic enzyme for humans)

Glad you're checking it out further! I've never heard of it but my neice has a daughter-in -law who's a vet so when I have a chance I will ask her!

Hi Alice,
I called my niece today and told her I'd email her this supplement name and asked her if she could call her daughter in law (the vet) and ask her. I haven't talked with her but I'm sure she will call me! I'll let you know if I hear something!

Thanks Jane! I asked a specialist I talked to yesterday and she hadn't heard of it. She looked it up while I was on the phone with her and said it seems safe to give Finn along with his regular supplements but she couldn't say much since it was new to her. She was interested and said she was going to read more about it. I'm interested to hear whether or not your niece's daughter-in-law knows what it is.

I checked the groups on yahoo that I belong to and found some info:
I first read about it in “The Whole Dog Journal.” I do not know why, but you can’t get the Fido-Wobenzym here, in the states. The company, Naturally Vitamins (www.naturally.com) sells Medizym-Fido, which is similar to Fido-Wobenzym, but with fewer additives—said to be more natural. These tablets contain: Pancreatin, Papain, Bromelain, Trypsin, Chymotrypsin, and Rutosid, as the active ingredients; plus, Silica, Oligo Polysaccharides, Modified Plant Cellulose, pH Resistant Enteric Coat Blend, and Vegetable Stearic Acid. I am waiting for my first bottle of Medizym-Fido. As I said in a previous post, the company was supposed to have bottles ready for shipping as of this week. I have not recently found an article on how this product works. I did read an explanation of the process as to how these enzymes target inflammation a while ago, and I was impressed. My initial cost was around $30 for 100 tablets. The shipping was around $10 (UPS). I believe the sales person told me that shipping would be waved if I spent $100 on products. So, it is a bit pricey. The other piece of information is that Wobenzym N is three times the strength of Fido-Wobenzym. I am assuming that it is the same for Medizym versus Medizym-Fido. Even with “natural” drugs, I am careful of dosages, to a point of slightly underdosing—just trying to be careful.

The link I posted is to the Whole Dog Journal article. Was it in ortho dogs or the other group? I thought it said that the Fido-W and the regular W here in the US are the same and that in Germany they are different only because the human version has food coloring and sugar in it. Here in the US people didn't want the dye and sugar so the beige pill available here is the same is the Fido version over there. Does that make sense? I didn't see anything about the strength being different though. For person they recommend 3 pills twice a day so I would do only 1 pill twice a day if I gave it to a dog Finn's size. I’m the same as you in that I prefer to give the lowest dose possible.
I hadn't heard of Medizym before but it sounds like the same thing. You'll have to let me know how you like it. Are you supposed to give it daily no matter what or just while injury or inflammation is present?

I double checked the ingredients and Wobenzym and Fido-Wobenzym have the same amount of the same ingredients. The nutritional values of Wobenzyme are based on a 3 pill dose so they look higher but when divided by 3 they are the exact same. Just FYI in case you would like to use Wobenzym, but the pills you bought have the exact same stuff too so they should work the same.
They have an enteric coating, so does that mean the dog MUST swallow it whole? I saw mention of people hiding it in treats but it doesn't seem like they would be allowed to chew it.

The Ortho group had information on this supplement. People posted who have hands on knowledge of it, and are currently using it. I just went to all messages and used the search engine on the page...
