Traveling through Canada with Ella, What do I need???
Hi everyone,
Over the holidays, we will be traveling through Canada to get from Michigan to Massachusetts. This will save several hours of travel time, if we go this way instead of staying in the US.
What paperwork (etc) will we need to take Ella through both Canadian and US customs???
Husband, son, and I all have passports so we are good; but we've never traveled anywhere with Ella.

I don't really know but I would make sure all her shots are up to date and you have the proofs of it along.

She is current on everything, and I know I have her rabies paper just have to find it in the file cabinet.

I would also take proof of her other shots to be sure. You could call the vet and ask them to give you a list and dates. I don't know if there is someone you could contact if Canada would require any shots we don't??? Maybe someone on this site would know???

This story was inspired by the dark, stormy night when we were returning to Minnesota from a backpacking trip in Ontario back in college days. The customs agent asked the driver to open the glovebox, whereupon a pack of Zig-Zag joint rolling papers fell onto the open door, right-side-up, right on cue. A quick flashlight inspection of the floor prompted the agent to remark, "Why, you boys got enough seeds down there to start a plantation. Step out of the car, please..." Would've helped a lot if we'd had a corgi with us.
Just make sure the dog is awake and smiling, and you can get away with anything. :-)

Ella is always happy and smiling!!! We are leaving in the evening, so she will probably be asleep though by the time we get to Canada. I'll have to wake her up when we get close, nothing cuter than a half away and snuggly corgi.

maple syrup, all parties crossing borders must donate maple syrup to the border guard for extensive testing proving said syrup inferior due to its likely lack of Canadian origin.

lol, my dad actually made maple syrup a few years back. it was better than any you can buy.
i'll be sure to go to the store and buy some to bribe the customs guards with it.

we just did that 2 months ago, within 10 days of departure, go to your vet and ask for a health clearance certificate, depending on last check up and shots record, you may or may not need extra shots, when you cross the border, if your pet needs to be inspected, they will tell you to go to the designated area and present those documents. it takes slightly longer, but since you crossing from the US, it should be quite smooth.

When we got our corgi from the states last year and were bringing her back into Canada we had all of her shots up to date and a health certificate, they never asked for a thing at the border. Also, have friends that just arrived from Calif. to Vancouver with corgi and were never asked, they asked the customs person if they wanted to see his papers and the customs officer said, no, he looks very healthy and probably more up to date on everything than you are......
You must have a current rabies tag......

Ok, if I read this correctly - if we drive with Ella through Canada, then she will need her rabies certificate and her vaccine list (just in case). But she won't need a health cert???
"Question 11: Does my pet dog need a health certificate?
Unaccompanied pet dogs less than 8 months of age will require a health certificate.
Pet dogs over the age of 8 months that are travelling to Canada by air may require a health certificate. Contact your airline carrier for additional information on their requirements."
