Hello fellow corgi fans, I recently came across an information flier that claimed that dogs that eat with elevated food bowls have greater chance of getting canine bloat.  Since this could be a fatal illness plus my corgis have used elevated food bowls their entire lives, it really got my attention.  Do you know if this is real? There were also some claims that the study was only done with large dogs.  What about corgis?

Thanks

It doesn't apply to Corgis.

In a nutshell, the Purdue study reveal elevated food bowl is not the sole cause, but a part of the non-dietary factors, to get the complete picture, there are dietary factors that needs to be taken into consideration. If you read the actual paper, it explains how the research was done. For example: how many dogs were chosen, how many of them were actually tested, how many different types of diet, meal frequency...etc.

Tufts summarized the above studies in a conference "the typical dog that develops bloat - a deep and narrow chest; leanness; a relative that has had a bloat episode; eating quickly; a dry-food diet; a single, large daily meal; stress; and a fearful, nervous, or aggressive temperament."
Thanks for the links, Sam. This was very helpful.
Anybody know how often bloat occurs in corgis?
A friend lost a standard poodle this way.
Sam's right. However, there's no reason corgis would need elevated bowls; their noses are already AT their toes! Elevated bowls have been common among giant-breed dogs and in fact were often recommended as a bloat preventer; the Purdue study showed us that we were wrong.
