I am wondering how do you keep your corgi smelling acceptable (notice it doesn't have to be good, just NOT rank) during the spring thaw? Our snow is just finally starting to melt and the yard is a spongy mud pit. Penny had a bath two days ago and already reeks to high heavens because of all the stagnant water she can't resist playing in everytime she goes into the yard. I don't want to bathe her too much since it can dry her skin. So is there some trick to keeping your dog decent? Baby wipes aren't cutting it either. Is there a good shampoo you can recommend that lingers longer without making her smell like a fruit salad or breakfast cereal? or are their doggie wipes that can be used at the end of the day to freshen her up? any help is appreciated. A few days ago I picked my daughters up from school and the 5 year old said, "I miss Penny. She is such a stinky dog, stinky dog, stinky dog. I wanna play with our stinky dog." I must find some solution soon as this thaw will be going on for several months before it is dry outside. :-\

Jane, I was talking to a gal at a show the other weekend who used to work for a professional handler. She said they bathed all the dogs he was handling in Aveda shampoo! I thought that was funny since it's certainly my favorite shampoo!
Target and Walmart both carry a line called Pro Pet that makes some good stuff. I have been using the line's dog bathing wipes for "in-between baths" and you can use them everyday. I usually use them on Howie's paws bc that is what stinks the most and first, but I also have used them on his whole coat, his ears, and his belly when it gets muddy or wet from being outside when there's dew on the ground. Another thing I would suggest is keeping a towel by the door so as soon as you bring your dog in from outside you can give him/her a good wipedown. For us, it's become part of Howie's training process. He knows to sit and stay while I wipe him down and I can even get him to stay in the foyer while I go get a towel if I happen to not have one there! Frequent brushing helps with the smell, too, because you can brush out dander and dirt and anything else that make be causing your doggie to stink. I give Howie breath mints made by Pro Pet, too, and I've noticed a big change in how his breath is!

Hope this helps, and good luck!

ps- if you're looking for a good pet shampoo, Paul Mitchell has a line of pet products. I use an oatmeal one for Howie.
Yes, in-between baths" wipes are exactly what we need. Penny tends to get filthy on her feet and chin (since she is always snuffling around looking for some good rabbit poop to eat), so wipes like this would be great. The baby wipes we have just aren't cutting the grime. I did see the Paul Mitchell line when I was last shopping. I will check it out next time I am at the store

Do you have a brush recommendation? Do you think a bristle brush or pin brush works better?
I use two brushes with Howie. One is a silver loop and it has teeth on it and that is the most effective I think. The other one is a paddle type brush. It has pins on it. I don't think a bristle does much other than make the coat look shiny. It's not going to pull out dirt or excess hair your know?
OT but, Milo likes rabbit poop too! He doesn't eat any other poop but bunnie crap. LOL How odd.
We use Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo. It has the interesting property of making the dog smell like J&J again every time he gets wet. Also, a regular towel-off for the dog during the play sessions will help keep her drier and therefore less smelly. :)
Interesting that the shampoo smell comes back when the dog gets wet. This is good to know!
There are lots of no water dog shampoos. Just spray them on the dog, lots come in a trigger spray bottle, and rub in with a small towel and they smell MUCH better. Makes their coat soft and shiny also. Try WalMart, Taget, or a pet store.
I will take a look next time I hit Target, This sounds like another great alternative to a full bath!
I found a couple of sprays at the health food store mine smell like either lavender or raspberries mixed with deer urine or whatever most of the time! LOL
lol yummy!
Gosh, I'll have to ask my friends if our dogs stink. I'd be the last person to know. Seldom bathe them, and I fall asleep with my nose in their ruff, they always smell good to me.
