So... I started introducing raw food to the pups today... Charlie went ecstatic and is the happiest boy in the world right now...

I was terrified at first about the bones (I'm sure like many) but after watching him devour meat bones and all I was relieved and feel much better about it.

So while one little dog is the happiest pup in the world...I had issues with the other.

Roxi doesn't seem to like it. She sniffed it.. gave me the "Wheres the food?" look.. licked it and walked right up to me. So I sat down and picked it up and tried to get her to eat it out of my hand.. no luck.. let her take it and she nibbled then came back to me..

this repeated until Charlie was done.... and finally I gave in and gave her, her normal meal.

Anybody have to introduce this to picky eaters? Any tricks? I'm thinking of buying boneless chicken and mixing it in her meal and see if that works but I think its the chewing/eating part she's not getting since she's used to bite sized treats/meals.

Any suggestions would be helpful :) Thanks!

Hooray!
Beware of big bones. Siri lived for 7 years on chicken wings, necks, and drumsticks (small ones). She was a gulper, though: she inhaled her food, and nothing dropped in the kitchen ever hit the floor. One bad day, there was this turkey neck... it was all over very quickly.
:( That's very sad I'm so sorry to hear that that happened. It actually sounds like the horror moment I repeated in my head before starting this venture.... I'll keep it in mind - I'm already a paranoid mom so I guess that'll help a little heh.
John, that is very sad. I am curious, if you don't mind me asking, did Siri ever seem to have problems on any other kinds of bones? To me, the neck bones just seem so easy to choke on due to their shape, unless you feed them to a Chihuahua or something. I don't feed them for that reason (I had in the past and they scared me half to death the way the dogs would just swallow them).
I'm sorry if this is sensitive to ask.. I was wondering what makes the neck bones so much easier to choke on then the others. I was looking at photos of them and my only guess was all the little separate pieces?
Siri routinely GULPED whole chicken necks for years. She was a gulper. GLURP! Gone. Chicken wings, drumsticks (all raw of course). But a whole turkey neck was too much. She was not a big corgi, under 20 lbs.
Don't worry about my feelings; this is sad to remember but I share the lesson freely.
I remember the good times with Siri more than her tragic death. She was the person who taught me to love dogs.
FYI, my wife got into the raw thing because of large sores Siri was chewing into her skin as a young; possibly a food (corn?) allergy; this disappeared on the raw diet.
Now, we have this local Seattle company, Darwin's ("A Natural Selection", not making this up) that delivers frozen GROUND raw meat to our door. I don't even want to know what we're paying for it. Supplementing with Wellness kibble.
I start my female on a raw diet as soon as her UTI is taken care of. I hope she isn't picky about her recipe. I had a nutritionist formulate it for me since she has struvite crystals and bladder stone problems.
Ooo that sounds interesting. Care to share when you start? I'm following a menu I found online and tweaked it a little by other information I read up on.
http://www.berner.org/pages/dogcpr.pdf We want to take a course in this. I think it's a great idea.
Ok my female started her raw diet three weeks ago. It was formulated by a nutritionist for me. Things are going really well, she loves the mixture and only had a few problems figuring out how to eat the chicken wings whole. Now she crunches right down on them without a problem and loves them. I took a wing and kind of pulled the meat away from the bone a bit and gave it to her to eat by her regular food bowl. She picked at it some more and then started gnawing on it finally. I'm so glad we don't have an issue anymore, I was worried about it since she gets one to two wings each day as part of her weekly recipe.

It does take a good chunk of time to make her food every two weeks but I'm finding methods to cut down on prep time each time I do it. I'm considering getting a meat grinder attachment for my Kitchenaid to save my poor Cuisinart from blending the meat together.

My nutritionist said you can sometimes sprinkle a bit of garlic powder on the meat and it will entice them to eat it. Sabine over at http://www.betterdogcare.com/ did my recipe for me. She is very helpful and I don't have to worry about my dogs having any sort of mineral or vitamin deficiency.
