I have the hardest time with Jodi and weight. When we first got her she was five years old and a little underweight. Having been passed around a bit in our family she was also VERY insecure. So we did spoil her - I admitt :):) I've just never had a Corgi who would "cry" (whine) for food like this one. They all are food hounds - no doubt about it - but Jodi is just fanatical about it. We're down to 1/2 cup of "diet" food (very expensive, very healthy food) twice a day and one small raw hide "stick" along with maybe two small cookies a day. She does get taken for walks most every day - but I cannot get the weight off her. Any ideas? I can't cut back on her meals - does anyone know how fattening raw hide is for dogs? Other than the weight and some aggression towards other dogs, not all others just some, she is a very happy, well loved Corgi.

It is hard not to give in to the whining, but we have to say no. And my husband has also been busted more than once for giving our dogs treats and people food after agreeing not to do it. Plus he was in denial about Taffy's weight. I kept begging him to stop and he kept insisting that Taffy was not overweight. It was finally a judge at an agility trial who said something to me, thank goodness! I pointed her in the direction of my husband and said "talk to that man right there." That's when he finally accepted that Taffy had a weight problem and he was a major contributor to the problem. As my vet pointed out once, it's not like the dogs can get their own food out of the fridge. If they're overweight, it's our doing. And our Taffy was overweight, poor baby. Six pounds doesn't sound like much but when you start out at 28 pounds, it's over 20% of your body weight. It would be like going from 170 pounds to 135 pounds. Taffy is MUCH happier now. She plays a lot more and has more fun doing agility too.
Just thought I'd chime in with a an update. I weighed Moira at work on Wednesday and she's now down to 31 lbs.!!!! Amazing. She's got a waist again. And you can see her feet. (She looked like one of those hippos with so much skin you couldn't see anything.)

Stay strong on the whole treat and people food thing. It really makes a difference. Besides feeding people food from the table is what teaches a dog to beg.

Keep us posted on your progress with her!
Hello.
I am experiencing the same problem with my corgi. She is 8 yrs of age and is the most pickiest eater ever. A friend recommended his website:www.thehonestkitchen.com"and the brand ive been feeding my dog is called "force" for weight management. basically its wheat and gluten free. Make sure you dont feed your corgi any types of snacks. Definetly check out the website.

Good luck!
QP.
I used to feed Mei 1-2 rawhides per day and then decided she needed to diet. I only took away the rawhides, giving it to her 2-4 times per week and she lost 3-4lbs. (She wasn't too hefty though, 29lbs down to 25lbs)
Walks are great but maybe that isnt enough? also is there someone that may be sneaking her food sometimes? for Scout i found that a walk wasnt usually sufficient but having him play with another pup at the dog park is. he doesnt chase anything so thats what we do. having another dog tire him out in an hour is definitely a lot easier and fun for him. i have also never given him rawhides so i dont know how much they are. we give scout bully sticks or the braided ones that are made from muscle and the occasional pig ear. it usually takes him a week to finish off a stick (not much of a chewer). also, nylabone makes healthy edibles. i guess its really a matter of cutting down the extras for right now anyway.
has anyone ever tried the beneful healthy weight food? since winston isnt living with me it's hard for me to control what he eats and doesnt eat... hence why my boyfriends mom (winstons been staying with my boyfriend and his parents for now) has been feeding winston a FULL HOT DOG every morning for breakfast... which i had no idea.. until she said she switched him to 3/4 of a turkey dog because HER vet said that 1 hot dog for winston every morning is way more than winston should be having in an entire day... you can imagine my anger/frustration/confusion as to why she was feeding him that but also an understanding as to why he shot up about 7 pounds in weight since he moved in there... i asked that she not feed him any turkey dogs in the morning and just give him dry dog food (i had him on puppy chow when he moved in, he had just turned 1 and i was about to switch him to the regular purina dog chow)... because once i move out and winston is obviously coming with me, he will not be getting any hot dogs of any sort in the morning, he will go back to the diet that he was on... but when i asked her to switch him to dog food in the morning she got somewhat defensive.. GRRR... anyways.. since they own an 8 year old pyrenees, they feed the pyrenees (sam) senior dog food which they hae now been feeding WINSTON (winstons not even 2!!!!!!!) but they had both on weight-maintenance food for a little while.. well since i didnt want winston to be on senior dog food, i bought the beneful healthy weight and my boyfriends mom said that her vet said that stuff isnt good and "doesnt work..." i didnt get a large bag of it cause i wnated to try it out and see how he liked it first... anyone try it? any results? i might do the green bean thing but i dont know if my boyfriends parents are willing to feed him green beans all the time... even though they give him more scraps than 20 corgis could eat >:o grrrr.

sorry for the rant. im just currently very frustrated/upset that i havent been able to move out yet and live with my pup :(
Sounds like grandma is spoiling your dog. People with bigger dogs don't really get how much corgis plump up with snacks like that. Haven't tried Beneful Diet food. The last diet food we tried gave Daisy a urinary tract infection and she had it twice from the same food so we gave up on that. They just get 1/2 cup of food twice a day. We give them a really healthy (pricey) food in the morning and the Purina at night just for a little variety. Dogs get sick of the same old flavors everyday just like we do. They also get a few baby carrots for a snack during the day. Maybe a raw hide each once a week. They aren't that good for them I've heard. Good luck!
Is there a reason you can't take him back to live with you? I don't understand why she is complaining about the food issue. It's NOT her dog. I would definitely have a conversation with her about your dog and his health. You would like him to have a long healthy life and feeding him what she is.. He will not have that. Wow at the arrogance of people. Just because someone feeds their dog whatever doesn't mean that they have to feed YOUR dog the same way. And because they are different breeds with VASTLY different size/metabolism... SHOULD NOT BE FED THE SAME WAY. I would be very upset too. Is there a reason she is feeding him and not your boyfriend? I would think that you and your boyfriend would discuss what your dog's diet should be and then he should be the one in charge of that sort of thing... Just my opinion. Sorry if anything offends you. Hugs from me and Kota.
take her to the vet for some tests, there arer several medical issues that she could be suffering from.
You sure Jodi's not pulling a Six Dinner Sid (Inga Moore) trip on you?
Gwynn & Al get 0.5 c of Darwin's raw meat twice daily, with -- lessee -- 0.25 c kibble? Tiny treats.
Darwin's delivers frozen biweekly and I don't even want to know what it costs.
My wife just told me our friends finally got their golden's weight under control when they switched to this diet.
And then... soccer ball therapy! Find some off-leash play area, Jodi will quickly learn the Corgi Mind Control Trick, and make you kick that ball for as long as she wants, + 15%. You could try a tennis ball chucker (atlatl), too.
