First Time Babysitting with my Corgi

So I finally am getting my chance to watch my niece at my house, Im soooo excited!!! She is four months old.

I am looking for advice on how to introduce Lance to my niece, seeing he has not been around young babies. He has been around toddlers but not babies. I do know that he seems to think it is his job to protect the kids so Im sure he will think the same with the baby.

Im wondering what is the best way to get Lance accustomed to her. I just hope he doesnt bark alot while she is with us. I will have her for appoximately 6 hours.

I really wish that Lance had the chance to grow up with babies around him in the house.

Here is a picture of Lance with my nephew when he was about 2 and my nephew was about 4 years old.

Oh how fun!!!!!! I am assuming that your niece will have a car seat or infant seat type carrier. I would probably set this either next to you on the couch or floor and let Lance come up and smell her. Wynn has to check out all babies entering at the door and sticks his nose into the carseat! It could scare him if she cries...it's hard to say. I had pics of this but lost it all when my computer crashed! Can't wait to hear what he thinks of the baby! I have to shut the bedroom door when I babysit as if my grandson is in there they want to be sleeping next to his crib!

Thanks Jane!!! Im thinking maybe of taking Lance on a stroller walk with Erica. I think when Erica cries Lance will probably run at her trying to protect her cause he will think shes hurt. Im going to have to let him know I have things under control!!!

I think when she first enters the house I will have him gated in the kitchen as he gets super overexcited when we have company over and the barking is overwhelming, so I think if I gate him in the kitchen and then let him out when he calms down it might be better that way.

Hopefully I will be able to get pictures, I love pics, so we will see!!

Yes Natalie, I think gating Lance till things calm down and you get ready are a great idea! A walk would be great too but do plan ahead as it is not quite as easy as just walking a dog but it can be done...you are pushing a stroller and keeping the dog next to the stroller...1 more hand would be great! Can't wait to see how it went although I'm sure it will be fine!

Recently we introduced a very close friends infant Aprox 1 month old to our two. AJ is GREAT with children and infants and JR is alot more excitable. As usual AJ was fabulously behaved and JR was extremely well behaved. He did exactly what Jane was talking about and checked out the car seat and baby on the sofa ( he was on the floor) and under heavy supervision as we did not know what is reaction would be and he really liked the baby!!! YEAH! ^-^ HAve a great time with your niece!!!!

Our pack has been living with my grandson present for some time now. They play tug with him (using corgi babies, not him) and try ton include him in their games of chase. They've also discovered he's an excellent source of table scraps. When they can, the boys like to clean his face after he eats, earning them the new nickname of "the napkins".

Strangely, Fred the foster corgi is the best with the infant. He sits quietly next to him when the child is on the floor. He also allows the child to "pat" him and pull at his fur and ears. We were very worried about Fred and the infant when Fred got here, but thankfully everything turned out well.
