hi all, my 14 month old male corgi kirby has some weird tummy problems. almost every eavning his tummy feels hard. he does not show any sighn of pain or discomfert if i massage/ rub his tummy and it usually sofens up after a belly rub. his stools are usually hard, but they are soft after his third time deficateing at the dog park (he only goes that frequently at the dog park) his tummy grumbles a bit too.i took him to the vet when he was about 11 monthes old because he had pinkeye. i mentioned the tummy problem to the vet he had a feel, and he didnt seem too conccerned. kirby is a calm little fellow, but he is easy to rile up so idk if it could be worms, but they are not generaly a problem up here.... any input or guesses what is up with his tummy????

Hi Amerberlie!

Hard stomach / stool is constipation, you may want to increase Kirby's daily outdoor on leash walk time, his confinement area, increase his water and fiber intake.
I agree with Sam. Has he ever been wormed? Worms can be picked up from many sources.
i don't think he has... when i told my mom we should get him wormed, she told me we don't have that kind of thing up here(in alaska), because our older lab mix has never needed to be wormed and since he doesn't eat the stuff dead stuff our cats bring in we definitely don't have to worry about it. but i really want to get his stools checked for peace of mind, you never know what stuff you can find at the dog park
I would get him tested for worms. Just because you do not see any doesn't mean that he doesn't have any. Since you take him to the dog park you cannot be sure that the others dogs have not been exposed to them. It could also be the brand of food that you are feeding him, the ingredients in the food can influence his bowl movements as well. Good luck and keep us posted
If it were me I would take a sample in or call the vet and have them put the wormer in syringes(you will need 2 doses) it's very cheap. Please don't buy something from the store as these aren't as good. It could be food as someone stated also but my 1st thought was worms...people think those cute little round bellies are nice but many times they're worms. Let us know what happens. As sam suggested also water is very important for keeping bowels soft! Do you have rabitts up there? They most of the time have tape worms. Also any dropping from other animals can have worms.
i called my vet and they said they test fecal samples for $57 so it will probably have to wait til i get some money on aug. 1st :/. wild rabbits running about, but he has never been in contact with one. @ jane i wouldn't dream of buying my baby anything the vet didn't prescribe, not after all i have heard about the flea and tic meds :/
Sorry Amberlie, i didn't mean to offend you it's just sometimes people don't realize this. Another thought would be to just worm him including for tape worm and it would be much cheaper, I just checked and my worm med(not tape worm was less than $6...I know things are much more expensive in ALASKA.
i wasnt offended at all jane, i didnt meant to come off that way. i am very grateful for your imput :) sorry if i sounded rude, i am a first time puppy owner, i need all the help i can get lol
You don't need to be a first time puppy owner to sometimes need advice Amberlie...we all occasionally need thoughts,ideas and answers:)
If you have you dog tested for worms and it's negative, it's probably constipation. Do Sam's advice and for added fiber, a tablespoon of plain pumpkin with his meals will help with that. Also, helps with diarhea (?). I always have a can in my cupboard and I'll freeze serving sizes using a cookie scoop, perfect size. I give them to the dogs about once a week as a treat.
::::UPDATE:::::::

good news everyone!!!! kirby does not have worms. he went to the vet today and got tested and the vet says that he is probably constipated and to up his fiber intake (the store was out of pumpkin >:( ) and he should be set. another thing. the vet said he has allergies, as in hay fever type thing. does anyone else have a corgi with that type of allergy???????
