Hi my Katie and I jsut got back from the dog park, and I am worried sick! She was the only dog there that wouldnt play or run. I walked her down to the lake (only to find labs and retrievers) and back which was about a 1/4 mi walk and she was beat.

She wouldnt let any other dog get near her hip area. she would snap at them. She does have a waddle when she walks, has had it since she was a baby, only lately its been a much wider waddle. I have noticed last couple of months, she has missed her step a few times, and has tripped, or jsut then decided to sit in the same place she missed that step.

I thought it was because of lack of excercise but lately I have been taking her on walks. At 1st, it was only around the block, and then 2 blocks, ect. only when the weather is cool enough, she hates the heat.

I keep her nails nice and trim, cause I thought it might be that, but it isnt.

I've read some of the posts about hip displaysia, and all who owned dogs with it talked about a popping sound, and I dont hear anything.

She does sway her rear area when standing, like she is unsteady. she still wants to jump on the couch but I put a stop to her jumping down, I carry her down, every since a woman at work had her min pin almost paralyzed jumping off the bed..

Last winter she did have an incident where she jumped off the couch and was acting hurt for about 5 mins, but then she seemed ok.

She has always swayed in her step or stance, even as a puppy, I thought that was normal because of having such a long body. Her front legs are very strong and even when she stands, but her back legs do sway and seem unsteady.

Katie is the runt of the little, she is much smaller than other corgis, and boy did I see that today and the corgi meetup!

Anyone else with a similar problem? any help on Corgi health issues with symtomps like this?

I hear hip displaysia just gets worse over the years, and I want Katie to live a long and healthy, and happy life. she seems bothered by this and sleeps most of the day in my room on her pillow.

Help!

Pat

Thanks all, and Joanna, is there any informoation on wobbler syndrome? I jsut cant afford the 3000.00 or so to find out from a neuro. she is 3 1/2 yrs old. the vet says is definately a neuro thing going on, he is doing some s=research that maybe he can help with doing some tests himself.
i am going to google wobbler syndrome and see cause she does wobble....maybe its that?

any info or links that can help on those subjects?

this is rel insight to me! thanks, Pat
I wanted to say, yes she does knuckle down on her right leg, but not every time she steps. she was playing yesterday, and when finished i let her out and she knuckled over on the back right every step. looks like after a walk too she does that. but after rest she doesnt knuckle down, jsut wobbly in the rear, as always.
What I think your vet will say is that she has little or no awareness of what's going on behind a certain spot on her spine. Her brain is sending the right signals but her proprioception (what tells you that your foot is on the floor and not in the next room) is missing. That's why she knuckles over and wobbles. If they can find a narrowing in the spinal cord, you may be able to get her some relief with acupuncture and chiropractic (gold bead implants help a lot of dogs, if you want to go that far), but there's not a real treatment beyond that.
THanks Joanna, I talked to the vet today, he didnt think it was transitional vertebrae, it is possible he said for wobbler syndrome. Although the vet said it usually affects all 4's, I did read up on it a little last night and this morning before work, and it didnt seem that it affected all 4's she does have the symptoms, he said the prognosis is grim on that too, there is some surgery that can help.

During the exam he said there was a spot in her spine she was alittle sensitive, but he xrayed that and it looked ok from the xray. Although it may take an MRI to tell for sure or see more.

I was contacted today from the Univ of Missouri Dr, that wants to talk to my vet. So he will call them tomorrow. They said they could help with a phone consult with him.
Any other questions, I hope they can ask me. more of her history possibly.

I am doing some research myself tonight. I jsut didnt have much time yesterday.

Kepp you fingers crossed, if anyone know of links, Please let me know!
Thanks everyone!
Pat
Hi Pat, I am sorry about Katie. Don't worry about her behavior at the dog park. She was in pain and didn't want to get hurt, thus snapping at the dogs. I do hope you get answers soon. I was thinking the diagnosis of DM when I saw her. It is good you are trying to get help for her. We have often had our furry kids go to Michigan State for help (need a referal from your vet) However last I heard there wasn't a neurologist on staff there. It is usually less expensive than going to the specialists locally. I do know of a wonderful canine neurologist in Canton, should you end up going that far. I know it is a little bit of a drive, from where you are it would probably be about 45min-1hr. We used him for our Otto.He can do an MRI there, if needed. But I see at the webiste I have attached they do DNA testing, fairly reasonably. The website I found could be the same one you are using from Missouri http://www.caninegeneticdiseases.net/DM/ancmntDM.htm She is a beautiful girl and I pray you find answers for her and yourself.
Hi Pat

We have been having the same problem with Baron for the last 3 months. He is now 7 months old. The final diagnosis is the right arm bones did not grow properly. The humerus is longer than the ulna and has started to bow out. There is nothing we can do except give meds on bad days. Baron will have good days and bad days. There are days when he just collapses at my feet and looks up at me with a sad face and other days when he is running around with no problems at all. How old is Katie? Hopefully she does not have the same problem.
Thanks everyone, SO far we know its not DM. my vet is waiting to do the phone consult with the Univ of Missouri on monday. She has been doing better since shes been home, jsut took her for a short walk and she pulled me 3/4 of the way, only slowed down 1/2 block away. She sisnt miss a step until I saw once when we got to the gate at home. only once tho.
The vet hasnt tested her for lyme, but he did tell me its very rare, for a citty dog, and he said to rule out transitional vertebrae. He said the wooblers disease he has seen effects all 4's. but it is possible, will probably bring her in next week for more xrays, so we have a full view of everything.
Also was talking to Kelly Groves and was told there are lots of corgis that are just wobblers and live a normal life, jsut wobbly. it very well could have been she was very tired sunday and cranky, she doesnt bite or nip at me, never has, it was the other dogs that came near her.
Katie is 3 1/2 Teresa, thanks for your reply.
I am going to steadily increase her excercies, oh, she also gained almost 4lbs in the last 2 weeks so I am cutting her back, I switched her food to organic, and didnt realise it was fattier since its less filler in it. so the extra weight could have been harder for her to carry.
thanks all will keep you posted!
HI Pat, I am so glad it isn't DM, hopefully you will find out what is causing the instability of her hind legs.
It's always good to rule out problems. Please keep us posted here. We are all sending you good thoughts and hoping for the best. she sounds like a very nice girld and neither of you should have to go through all this anxiety! take care
thanks everyone, this is all so heartwarming!
Hi Pat, I come to this late. i am glad it is not DM. The yahoo groop wheelcorgis is a very good place for information on DM and IVDD. It is invitation only, but very easy to join. I found referral through CorgiAid when applying for a cart for my Lucky who has IVDD. I am thinking that DM needs dx by DNA not xrays, did I see someone has made reference to that? I also am pretty sure it is a disease of much older dogs. I hope that you find the cause.
Pat, thought I would let you know, that I posted a note on the wheelcorgis group asking about wobblers syndrome. These people know a lot about corgis with DM and IVDD, of course, but it may be that they know about other neuro problems too. I will also check to let them know where you live, as there may be someone in the group near you who knows about vets and/or therapy.
