So a couple of weeks ago, I found Stanley ripping apart his supposedly indestructible toy and when he saw me, he ran off in the other direction.  That was a sure signal to me that he had something in his mouth he didn't want me to see.  Sure enough, he had found some plastic bit that we embedded in the toy.  I was able to get that piece from his mouth so he didn't swallow it.

Fast forward a couple of days later, we awoke to the sound of Stanley vomiting.  Robin cleaned it up and said there was a hard piece of plastic in it.  So we assumed that was it.  But since then, he's now thrown up twice more.  But the last two times, there was no hard pieces or nothing discernible in the vomit.  So I'm wondering what to do?  It's always the same time pretty much, always after sleeping all night, he'll wake up around 5am and vomit.

It's happened 3 times total.  Otherwise, he's completely fine.  He's eating normally, acting normally, pooping normally.

Thoughts???

Soffie has always been an "O'dark thirty puker"!! Although lately (being the last several months) she hasn't had an episode. I read somewhere that it's from an empty stomach, especially if it's happening in the wee morning hours and it's just a liquidy bile like substance. In the article it suggested feeding just a little bit before bedtime. We didn't do that but, what we did do was start giving the eveining treat later... like 9:00pm.

Griffyn picked up a big seed pod from a palm tree and it took two nights of puking to get rid of all of it. The first night (or wee morning hours) we found the big seed. The second night it was just liquid. Then.... he was fine.

But Stanley might still be having some upset from something stuck so ...... if it was me, and it continued, I would probably check with my vet just to be on the safe side. Plastic can have some sharp edges!!
I agree with Judi - I've heard that it's due to an empty stomach. Mine do this as well. If I can remember, I try to give them one of those dentastix or a large doggie biscuit right before bedtime and it seems to do the trick.

However, I'm not a vet so if there are other underlying causes, let us know!
What is he vomiting up? Usually when they puke from an empty stomach it's just clear or yellowish liquid. If he's actually throwing up his food I would probably make a vet appointment.
Yeah, it's usually just a pale yellow liquidy vomit, no food.
Adora had that problem so what we do is give then a milk bone, or medium size biscuit when they go to their crate/dog beds for the night. One it treats them for the good behavior of going to bed on command ( a great bonus) and two they have something in there belly to tie them over till breakfast.
This happened to Moose today too...No food, just clear liquid, then he went outside and went to the bathroom, had a frap session, came inside and ate breakfast. He got sick once more since then, and nothing came out. I called my fiance's dad and he said to keep an eye on him... I'm hoping it's just an upset tummy.
i have to add.. this same exact thing happened to teddy. the day before he was eating his plastic toy(which i didnt know until i walked in on him) he threw it up immediately but then the next morning he threw up the rest of the toy. it was hard and very sharp. i took him to the vet and said he is fine but his tummy will be very sensitive for some time and the food will will help coat the tummy. he really recommended table spoons of peanut butter on a small biscuit as it is thick and will coat the tummy and since its a protein it will last with him for some time. teddy did throw up a clear bile for awhile afterwards but now he is fine
Oh that's good to hear. Thanks for sharing.

Something tells me Stanley is going to LOVE all of this advice - treats before bedtime, spoons of peanut butter! LOL.
lol o yea he will love the peanut butter:) and your welcome
Could we try the peanut butter for Moose too? He's accidentally gotten cheese before and I know it made his tummy upset (I told my brother to not give him anything without asking me, but whether or not he listened, I don't know. :/ )
yes peanut butter is great for dogs who have an upset tummy:) but yes no cheese since its a dairy product it may upset his tummy
it is probably due to an empty stomach and you can do as others have suggested and feed a treat or small meal before bedtime, sometimes a pepcid will help as well. If it started right at the same time as the toy incident Its more likely to be a partial obstruction. There may be something in his tummy that settles over the pyloric sphincter blocking it when he sleeps and causing him to vomit. Franklin is a rock eater and I can always tell when he has a rock in his tummy by random early morning vomiting. Usually by day 2 or 3 he vomits up the rock. Watch for vomiting shortly after eating or diarrhea which indicate a full blockage and needs treatment by a vet ASAP. Otherwise, just keep an eye on him and his vomit and he'll probably pass it in his stool or vomit in a couple days. My vet also suggested feeding lots of small meals during one of Franks last rock episodes. I think this was just to keep the stomach working and pushing the food (and hopefully foreign body) through the system.
