Not pride really, more like shameless narcissistic hubris and overweening megalomania. Al wants to be famous and rule the world.
No, actually, Washington Trails Ass'n is a worthy outfit, and the Photo Contest is one of their outreach things.

If you live in Washington and like to hike or have any interest in the outdoors, I STRONGLY encourage you to sign up for one of their Trail Work Parties. No trail will ever look the same to you again! WTA volunteers do a lot of work that frees up the USFS to do other needed stuff. The work parties are not that hard, you meet fun people, great stuff to do with kids (not dogs, alas), really rewarding.
You likely live elsewhere, but look around and you'll probably find something similar.

Al is the Valentino of dogdom...or better yet, the James Dean! Look at his stance, his confidence, his royal corginess. Prince Wills fiance should take a look at Al before she throws her life away to the throne and Princess Di's ring. I'm sure Al would give her a diamond!

Now that the out-of-state corporate contributions are pouring in, Al promises everybody will get a pony if he wins, all expenses paid, and his supporters' taxes will be paid by somebody else's taxes. And there will be no limits on mushroom-picking.

Thanks to all who joined in the gleeful ballot-box stuffing of the Washington Trails Association Photo Contest! Voting is now closed, but I think Al was a whisker ahead of the highly deserving slime mold at last count (luckily, slime molds don't have whiskers).
I just read the contest rules (rules? in an election?), which state that the "Offbeat Outdoors" category will be judged IN PART by public online voting, so there's a chance that Al will be voted out by the Supreme Court or something. It's happened.
Winners will be announced in the Jan/Feb 2011 issue of Washington Trails. Washington Trails We'll keep you posted.
There are prizes for this contest. If any money is involved, Al promises to donate it to a local corgi rescue if he wins. Trust us. No, really. ;-)
And remember, supporters: you all will get a puppy! And a pony!
