am i being over reacted or should i worry?

when i take him out i am alway there with him until he has done his business but sometimes i am in a hurry and leave him out there for about 20mins. i am worried that in that time someone will steal him even though i am always looking out the window. i mean we live on the air force base but i dont trust so easily. he has his tags on and is microchiped but still, i havnt seen one corgi here DC or SC for that matter and cant help the though crossing my mind that someone will snatch him but like i said if i am in a rush and he has to go i really dont have a choice at times.

there is a gate on our fence but i suppose if someone really wanted him they would just jump the fence. i see people just leaving there dogs out for hours but i dont feel so sure. my husband thinks i am very reacting but idk:(

You're right to worry about people stealing on the base. My grandfather was an officer and he got stuff stolen all the time from his house. He got a boxer to guard the house and hired guards around the holidays. I like Chris' idea of having a yard line. You could always install a lock on the gate anyway, too. It's an improvement. ...
i have been wanting to put a lock on it but one of the rules of housing is for the gates is u cant have locks on them. i dont understand why but thats one of their rules. i am sorry that things got stolen from your grandfather. u wouldn't think things like that would happen on base. i am definitely going to look into a line. it may look a little goofy for a dog in a fence to be on a line but if its what i gotta do to keep him safe i will:)
I don't ever leave my dogs outside while I'm gone. I'll leave them in the backyard un-attended while I am home, but if they bark I go look and see what's up. And they aren't out longer than 15 minutes at a time. I know around here they have had stolen dogs in the past to sell to animal labs, so I'm extra cautious.
I don't worry about it as much with Sage around now. She'd eat any stranger that came near her--no doubt. She hates people she doesn't know...which I used to think was a fault, but is kinda nice that you know she'll guard you...
that is a nice feeling to have a guard dog. teddy would lick an intruder to death lol but like you if i am not home i will never ever leave him outside by himself. he loves to be in his crate so thats where he goes but if i am home then its no more than 15-20mins IF i have to otherwise i am always out there with him. the only thing is since i taught him not to bark(yes its true)..he just growls which i could never hear if hes outside
On the topic of stolen dogs being sold to labs, you can get a number tattooed on your dog, usually either in the ear or inner thigh, as in identifying number. It's kind of what they used before the microchip. Labs are less inclined to buy a dog with one of those. I don't know how much of a threat that is anymore though.
How about a handmade sign:
BEWARE OF DOG
BITES WITHOUT WARNING

A neighbor has a sign: WARNING. STRANGE DOG. (it's a joke, but it gives one pause).

Can you get away with bending the rules? Put a padlock on the gate and see if anybody notices ("...oh, golly, I thought it had always been there..."). And if you smile innocently and explain that you're worried about your dog you're gonna make anyone who whines about it feel like a real heel.

I was told of someone who had a malamute stolen out of a parked car.
People. They can make coyotes and cougars look good by comparison.
The more I get to know people, the more I like my dogs.
i agree 100% =) i have to say being in the military and moving around a lot i have meet some strange people and i grow closer and closer to my pets as they are innocent souls but some people...i personally would never ever think of taking someones dog.

and you are right about the lock lol if i hear someone complain ill just tell them the story and then they, like you said feel like a heel haha. now that i am thinking about it i dont think anyone would turn me in for a lock on my gate especially if it blends in well. its not like its hurting anyone.

the signs are a good one to, i like the 2nd one:)

Sadly, those warning signs can hurt you if there's ever a lawsuit from your dog biting someone!  Yes, apparently, if you warn people against your dog or have something indicating it bites etc., then it can be used against you.

I know what you mean about people.

i dont think teddy would ever bite anyone. he has never shown aggressive signs to anyone but i do see what u mean about the signs. they could use that sign to there advantage if such a thing ever happened. i have decided not to use signs because of that reason
Seriously, I would not leave him alone.....my vet warned me when we got our Corgi puppy and I had never heard of such a thing! There is a post on this site where a lady is heartbroken over her stolen Corgi........people steal them to sell or something, and no one cares if there is a microchip. What I read recently about this got my attention and I never leave any of my dogs unattended, but now I never ever would consider it....be careful and think of your heartbreak, God forbid it should happen. The one post is right..."People"......
i honestly dont know what i would do if he got stolen. me and my husband talked and agreed that he will always e attended as he is our baby and dont want him to be stolen. i just cant imagine how that poor lady feels:'( we have also agreed for security purposes that we will be getting the alarm that Sam showed us.
I'm so glad you have gotten such great advice here, and I admire how much you and your husband care about your pup.
By the way, your yard and your neighborhood look really nice :)
