My 17 week old puppy Ein is the first young puppy that I've ever had, and the only dog I've ever had to crate every time I leave her home alone. I can't help but have mini panic attacks every time I leave. The one thing that keeps popping in my head is "what if my house catches fire?" I've never had a house fire before, but I live in the dry desert of Phoenix and it could happen to anyone. There is no way she would get out alive if no one was there to rescue her. Now that I have her, I always double check that all appliances are off when I leave, and I'm a lot less likely to even run the dishwasher while I'm gone. Does anyone else have worst case scenarios running through their head every time they leave their pet crated home alone?

I do sometimes think what would happen in case of a fire. I live in an apartment and recently one of the buildings had a fire and it made me think even more. I was not at home when the fire occured, so what would have happened if it was in my building? They have those stickers you can place on your windows that say you have a pet in the house so the firemen know to look/rescue should the need arise.
Will have to look for some of those stickers or a sign or something. I've never had to think about it, cause our adult dogs have always been able to let themselves out the doggy door, and dogs are intuitive and know when somethings wrong and to leave the house. At least that's what I've always told myself, so I've never worried about it before. I seriously think I'll start leaving her crate right by the front door when I leave. There are no appliances in the front part of the house either.

Heather, I used to be like you when it was just my cats in the house, especially during electrical storms (plentiful here in VA), but now when I leave the house with the Cardi Boys in their ex-pen, the only thing I worry about is that they might escape and destroy my house.  That is sadly what having two very smart (and sometimes naughty) young corgis has done to me.

Do your neighbors know you have a pup in the house? Make sure they do and if you trust them, also a spare key to your house.

We only have one occupied home next door to us, and she knows that we have 2 dogs and has all of our contact information, but she doesn't have a key to the house. I don't know her that well yet.
I don't really over-think it, but yes, it's crossed my mind.  They have window stickers that indicate that you have pets in the house, and some will show where they are.  I'm married to a fireman, and believe it or not, they will risk their lives to save your pet.  He's been in two seperate departments in two states, and all of them have been animal lovers.  All of them.  They will save and resuscitate them if necessary.  A life is a life to them, and they are all just big teddy bears....so rest assured...
Yes, every community is fortunate to have men and women who risk life and limb every day to keep everyone

(and their pets) safe. You must be very proud to have a husband like that, but it has to be hard. I'm going to look for those stickers. Thanks.

My husband is a fireman too!!  They actually had a fire one time where one of the firefighters on his crew had to give a dog mouth-to-mouth.  The dog survived.  It is awesome what they will do to save pets.  I also highly recommend the pet window stickers.  I try to keep one of the window of every entrance into our house.

Here's a link to the ones that I use.  I get them from Amazon.  Only problem is that the ink wears off after awhile, so you have to remember to write on them again.  Upside is, if the number of animals you have changes, you don't have to buy new stickers lol!  http://www.amazon.com/Pet-Safety-Alert-Window-Decal/dp/B00079YTTC/r...

My vet gives out those types of stickers with their contact information on the bottom in case you can't be reached, which I think is a great idea. You could just write on the sticker where exactly the crate is located, it would probably be easier for the fireman to find than searching through a smoky house for a little dog!
i honestly am a person who always expects the worst so i know what u mean!:) i think of everything possible to keep my fur kids safe and think of the things that could happen such as a fire. the sticker idea is wonderful. i have given my neighbors my phone number just in case something happens along with info about the pets. i even have the traveling crates out in the open in an emergency

Yes!  I worry about my babies a lot!  They are fully dependent on me to keep them safe and secure!  So we have taken all the safety measures we know of.  We did make sure both our neighbors have our work numbers and cell phone numbers in case of emergency.  But I try not to dwell on what if...   and know that I am doing all I can.
