My 17 week old puppy Ein is the first young puppy that I've ever had, and the only dog I've ever had to crate every time I leave her home alone. I can't help but have mini panic attacks every time I leave. The one thing that keeps popping in my head is "what if my house catches fire?" I've never had a house fire before, but I live in the dry desert of Phoenix and it could happen to anyone. There is no way she would get out alive if no one was there to rescue her. Now that I have her, I always double check that all appliances are off when I leave, and I'm a lot less likely to even run the dishwasher while I'm gone. Does anyone else have worst case scenarios running through their head every time they leave their pet crated home alone?

Heather, I used to be like you when it was just my cats in the house, especially during electrical storms (plentiful here in VA), but now when I leave the house with the Cardi Boys in their ex-pen, the only thing I worry about is that they might escape and destroy my house. That is sadly what having two very smart (and sometimes naughty) young corgis has done to me.
Do your neighbors know you have a pup in the house? Make sure they do and if you trust them, also a spare key to your house.
My husband is a fireman too!! They actually had a fire one time where one of the firefighters on his crew had to give a dog mouth-to-mouth. The dog survived. It is awesome what they will do to save pets. I also highly recommend the pet window stickers. I try to keep one of the window of every entrance into our house.
Here's a link to the ones that I use. I get them from Amazon. Only problem is that the ink wears off after awhile, so you have to remember to write on them again. Upside is, if the number of animals you have changes, you don't have to buy new stickers lol! http://www.amazon.com/Pet-Safety-Alert-Window-Decal/dp/B00079YTTC/r...
Yes! I worry about my babies a lot! They are fully dependent on me to keep them safe and secure! So we have taken all the safety measures we know of. We did make sure both our neighbors have our work numbers and cell phone numbers in case of emergency. But I try not to dwell on what if... and know that I am doing all I can.
