Hello- this is my first post here on this site and I hope I can get some help from some Corgi experts! I adopted my corgi from Sunshine Corgi Rescue last year so I am still new to the breed.

My Corgi's skin and hair are absolutely terrible! He has really bad, dry skin and tufts of his hair pull off from the dry skin. I mean, literally, chunks of his hair! I took him to the vet and they cultured his skin and put him on antibx- and that was about a month and a half ago; but still his skin looks terrible. He has bald spots from the hair falling out. The vet did not find any infections, so I really suspect an allergy. I changed out his food and started to give him salmon oil gel caps to help.

My question is: have any of you guys out there experienced this before? I'm thinking of switching to a raw food diet, to eliminate the possibility of a corn or grain allergy. Any thoughts, comments, or advice would really help! Thank you!

Our cardi mix, Tank, has allergies like you describe.  First, we put him on a food with no corn, wheat, soy, fillers, preservatives, etc.  That helped a lot.  We also added fish oil to his diet.  We brush him every day to be sure that fish oil gets through his coat.  Also, when he'd get hot spots (from where it was itching and he literally bit and scratched himself raw), we'd shave around them so the air could get at them and wash the sore with Hebi-Cleanse (Wal-Mart).  And he wore the cone of shame for a bit too.  He also gets Benedryl twice a day to help.

Good luck.  It's so hard when we see them suffer.  (PS: Our rescue Dundee came from a tip from Sunshine CR.  Love those folks!)

Thank You! I was using Hibiclense, too. It's a good anti-microbial that we use in the O.R. to clean people's skin, too. Is the Benadry you usel the ones that human uses or a special type from the vet?
Oh Sunshine CR is awesome! Sam is so nice and she has also given me advice about Sidney. Sam really made a perfect match for me when I was trying to adopt a Corgi. Such a great organization! I wish i can get another Corgi but Sidney is real jealous of other dogs!
It will take some time also for his skin to improve and his bald spots to fill in. Right now I have Bella "blowing her coat" and although she doesn't have dry skin she does looks like she has mange or some problem as the back half of her body is full of loose hair:( Bathing too often is also not good (I use my Aveda, many dog shampoos are too harsh) or if you use a furminator you can take too much of the good hair out. I use a grain free food as well and mine is salmon. Good luck:)
Thank you! It is on his lower half that is pretty bad and the funny part is that it's only on one side of his body, too! One side is terrible, the other side is lustrous. Very strange. The Aveeno seems to help a whole lot with irritation and I try not to bathe him as much as I used to. I also brush him everyday and use the Furminator! I appreciate your advice!
Our 1st corgi had skin trouble, chewed raw spots in her skin.  Lori switched her to a raw-food diet, bingo.  We've fed raw ever since, a company called Darwin's in Seattle delivers it frozen to our door, so expensive, but convenient and good.  You do have to mind sanitation with raw meat, and beware choking.  We do add a little Wellness kibble, which has barley.  Corn is supposed to be the worst grain allergen for dogs.
What a coincidence! Darwin's is the the food I am going to switch Sidney to! I'm glad somebody has experience with their food. I don't mind the price if it will make him better in the long run. I have heard only good reviews about raw food that I am willing to try it out. Thanks!
toady constantly had red eyes, not so much itching so i took him to the vet. They gave memantibiotics in case it was a infection( hes always got his face somewhere) and they didnt help. The alternative was benadryl and it has helped him alot. Ask your vet about it if you think it could be an option, its relatively cheap too.
