overweight corgis
Obesity is a very common problem in corgis. You mention just how hard they will plead to have one more morsel of food. Time to harden your heart just a bit. In rescue I would say that near 60% of the dogs that come in our program are overweight. Most often the problem lies in too much food and not enough exercise. I am typically not a believer is diet foods but changing the ration to be more appropriate for the dog. Many people do reduce the amount of kibble and add green beans. This has worked for many. Make sure that you lose a low sodium or well rinsed product. Many dogs love them. Good luck!

Let's be nice folks. I'm sure many of you are like me and get way too many emails to read every one and remember what you have read. These are my thoughts. Menu Foods makes many different food labels, including house brands. In order to "get the contract" a company usually has to be the lowest bidder, especially in todays world. Obviously the China ingredients are less expensive so Menu can bid lower. What I see as the major issue is quality control at the Menu production facilities. Every barrel coming into the facility should be tested by a good quality control department. Now remember that this is not required for dog food. Quality control people are expensive, as is the equipment. There is much more to all of this than "Menu foods makes bad product". The comsumer wants a lower price. The retailer therefore wants a lower price. The distributor must be able to bid a lower price. In order to bid a lower price, the distributore must buy the product for a lower price. It's a chain.
Wellness recently had an issue with product being moldy. They investigated and solved the issue quickly. They were packaging the product before it was completley dry. Most all companies are going to have an issue at some time. The real test of a company is how they address the issue.
The simple solution with Neutro is this, if you don't trust it, don't use it. End of story. There are many other high quality foods available.

One thing to remember is never feed your Corgi according to the package instructions. If you do, the Corgi will be obese. All of mine get 1/2 cup a.m. and p.m. That's it. Well, the agility boys get a bit more when performing, but not on a daily basis. When the rescues come in obese we give them 1/4 cup of food twice a day, and green beans or pumpkin to supplement. Treats are always baby carrots or apple. If they don't like them, then no treats. And treats are for working, not for simply doing what they should be doing. Coming when called, other than in training for same, is not always a reson for a treat. Hugs and lots of praise work well.

And I have so many clients that just dole out the treats. "But she looks so hungry." Arggghhh! That's how we ended up with Moira; the owners way overfed her and she became a burden to them. (Makes me want to scream!) There's nothing like a good "noogie" on the head to excite a happy dog!

Thank you for posting this. I was always confused because other dog foods said 2 cups twice daily for a dog of corgi size!!!
Then when I got the Blu, it said half cup servings, twice a day... and I panicked! Rationalizing that it just must be that concentrated... I complied... and even though it seems to be working great....I'm always terrified I'm not giving our girl enough! She wolfs down her food in five seconds flat, THEN looks up at me like I'm a horrible person for starving her! She's slimmed down quite nicely... but it hurts my heart to see her eat so fast!
Rolo... usually gets a full cup in the morning and again at night, but then...he's a *VERY* active puppy. Lately, though, he's not been finishing. I guess he's letting me know when he's full.

If hoovering food is an issue, you might try a Brake-Fast bowl. (http://brake-fast.net) It's got pillars in the bowl that slow your dog's eating down by causing him to eat around the pillars. It works quite well. Some PetSmart stores have one that's similar.

Yes. Or the least expensive way is to put a couple of tennis balls in the bowl. The dog has to eat around them. And you get cute photos too! ;-)

I have been trying to help our Milo lose weight. Thank you for posting this. This will certainly help. We have been cutting back on treats. I have been giving him apples and carrots instead. Even blueberries! Are Greenies ok for corgis then?

Rolo and Sadie both love raw veggies. The baby carrots are a favorite. Lately Rolo has been sneaking pieces of raw potato, too. (well, not really sneaking... if it hits the floor and I'm not quick enough...it's GONE!)
They have both learned what a treat it is to be in the kitchen when momma is cooking... LOL

Everyones going to think Pa'ani is weird but he loves steamed broccoli. Hes very odd. Also you can try celery with peanut butter as a treat. Dogs love peanut butter and its good for them!

I also feed my Corgi baby carrots and apples, she loves them! She gets a couple biscuits a day inbetween meals but that's it! I only feed her 1/2 cup am and pm and it's keeping her at a good weight. They are easy keepers!! I need to start adding green beans, she likes those too.
