i have a corgi that just turned a year old in July and she isnt gaining weight very good, i have her another appt with the vet tomorrow morning to get another fecal swab to see if possibly they missed something last time, she eats when she wants, she normally dont even eat 1/2 cup of food a day, we have feed her, Exclusive, science diet, and now feeding her Kibbles and bites, vet recommended on trying different foods to see if maybe she was a picky eater, we have slowly weaned her to each food as to not to upset her tummy.... any suggestions would be great on what may be going on with my girl! thanks! my profile pic was taken this summer at the lake. she weighs about 14.5 pounds.

Franklin was skinny up until he was close to 2 years old. I mean you could feel all of his ribs and the vet was hounding me to try to get more weight on him. He actually ate a lot but just never put on weight until he was older. I'd recommend feeding a higher quality/calorie food. Something like Taste of the Wild, Wellness, Innova, or Blue Buffalo. These foods tend to have 450+ calories per cup and that way you can get her more calories even if she continues to not eat much. The higher quality foods are made so you don't have to feed nearly as much and they still are able to digest it all and get good nutrition. A lot of dogs gain too much weight on these kinds of diets so it'd probably be perfect for her.  Kibbles N' Bits doesn't have much digestible protein or fat so there isn't much in that food to help her put on weight. I couldn't find anywhere how many calories per cup but I'm guessing its not much.
ok, i have made some calls around here to some of the pet stores within a 50 mile span, and i can get taste of the wild and blue buffalo which of the two would you recommend me trying? i'm willing to try anything to help her to gain some weight and be healthy! thanks so much for your help!
ok, thank you! i have never heard of those brands of food, i live in Arkansas, can you tell me where your able to find them? the Exclusive feed was the best of all the foods i have bought for her, she ate it pretty good up til i changed her from puppy to adult food, i cant remember the the calorie count on it but i do remember it being by far the highest! lol! ( also the most expensive, $38 for a 13lb bag)
Hi Kelly...I too have a recent discussion like this. Especially Sage, I changed my TOTW to bison as it has a bit higher fat but it would be too high of protein for a 1 year old. What I have found for Sage especially is that I make instant rice with just a bit of boullion and add a TBSP of rice with warm water at meals...she eats it much better now. I would suggest TOTW but maybe the chicken(?) or protein at around 25%, I believe the lamb is about that% also.
does she need to have 25% protein? i have been trying to keep her protein around 22%... have i just not been giving her enough?? :(    The vet said she didnt need the higher protein since shes in the house most of the time so i thought i was doing the right thing, but shes so skinny and i know somethings not right... Thank you both for your help!

25% protein is totally fine. I would try putting a little warm water in her kibble and see if that helps get her more interested. I would also try feeding her on a set schedule instead of free feeding. The idea of not having food available at all times might make her more motivated to eat her whole bowl of food in one sitting. She may skip a few meals here and there but she should get it eventually. Any of the brands mentioned above should be available at Petco or Petsmart if you have those near you.

Has she been wormed lately?

we only have a petsence here and they only have blue buffalo but our TSC has taste of the wild, i am going tomorrow after the vet visit to get her some new food! yes, she goes to the vet to get wormed on a regular basis. thank you for your help! i really appreciate it!
how old should they be before you switch to a higher protein? Just curious. The lower protein formulas are also lower in calories and fat. ALL of the Blue Buffalo varieties are really high calorie and Franklin liked them for a while but eventually he quit eating. He just refused to eat for almost a week just picking at his food here and there, so I switched to TOTW and he's been on it ever since. TOTW is also much cheaper than Blue Buffalo, it runs about $40 for a 30 lb bag here in Sac, where Blue Buffalo is around $45 for a 24ish pound bag.
I wait till they are 18 months to feed the higher protein. You are lucky for that price...I pay almost 50 for a 30# bag but it does last since they don't get tons of TOTW.
I have 3 thin corgis so you're not the only one but 2 out of my 3 eat fine and the 3rd is just picky and likes to eat alone in her kennel with the door shut. It has really helped adding the warm water for her to eat. I think that the dry food and her not drinking much water maybe even gave her a tummy ache. Guess I'll never know for sure but at least she's eating now. Be glad she's thin and not overweight. Is she maybe a small(length/heightwise) corgi?
i took Kylie to the vet today and NO internal parasites!!! yay!!! He did say that she may have a touch of acid reflux so for the next 2 weeks to give a 1/4 of a zantac twice a day and she how she does with it.  He said she is just smaller framed than most corgis, and that her top weight should only be around 18lbs, she was 14lb today, he said she was fine! I'm SO very happy to hear that she is fine! She is a very active little girl so i guess thats why she isnt gaining weight, i did go purchase a 15lb bag of taste of the wild, the vet recommended that i do the higher protein and higher fat with the first bag so i got the one with the roasted fowl, and so far she seems to like it! Thank you all for your help!
Glad all is well....I'm sure you know this but just a reminder to switch slowly so she doesn't get sick.
