In the four years that we have had Lance we have only had to board him once to go on vacation.  When we go on vacation we've always been able to take him with us except for our Disney trip.

I almost didnt think we were going on vacation at all this year because hubby didnt want to board Lance and my brother who we will be staying with, has a cat who doesnt like dogs!!  Lance really hasnt been exposed to cats at all.  I talked to my brother tonight, who said if the only thing that was stopping us from coming,  was not being able to bring the dog then we should bring him with us.

We now have to figure out how this is all going to work, since I worry about everything, lol.  We plan on keeping the cat and dog seperated.  We will put a gate up to block the upstairs which is where we will put the cat.  I dont think there is a chance of the kitty jumping the gate since the kitty is a bit out of shape.

Leaving the house:     Put Lance in his crate in a bedroom with the door closed.
Possible Roommate:  Not sure what I think of this idea yet, I am hoping that my brother wont have a
roommate until after our visit. (my brother will not know if he has a roommate
                                until the end of May).
Sightseeing:              Being gone for 8 hours or more for sightseeing in the DC area.

I just hope we are able to enjoy our vacation. I still say we should board Lance so that we would be able to do our sight seeing and not worry about him being cooped up while we are gone.  My brother moved to Virginia almost two years ago for a job and this will be our first time visiting him and is now a homeowner and has a place for us to stay.

If anyone has any ideas of how to handle the issues I have mentioned, I would love to hear what you have to say.  Or if you can think of any suggestions I have mentioned I am open to hearing suggestions as well.

I travel to my daughters house once every month or 2 with at least 2 dogs and it works well. I do crate them sometimes while were gone. If you think it's too long in a crate could you put him in the bedroom or bathroom with the crate door open? If the cat doesn't like dogs...he may just stay away? I think you have to know which will be better for you! I love bringing mine along but that doesn't work for everyone! but the door closed
Is there a doggy day care by your brother that might work. Then Lance would have a fun day while you are sightseeing. When we go away I have someone stay at our house with the animals but we have a large college by us and a lot of professors in our neighborhood that can recommend grad students. I have also hired vet techs from my vet's office. With three dogs and two cats it is actually cheaper than boarding everybody.
I was going to suggest the same as Bev.... Doggie Day care/camp, I am sure DC has many to choose from. He will have a blast, come back pooped and you will have no worries or guilt sight seeing.
I agree with this. We went on a road trip last month and brought Stanley along. It was a ton of fun and I was able to find a lot of attractions that I could bring Stanley along. However, we did want a day of sightseeing on our own, so I arranged for Stanley to stay at PetsHotel. It's a doggie daycare chain run by Petsmart. I was able to fax my paperwork in advance and make a reservation. That way, when we showed up, we just had to drop him off. He had a lot of fun. You can either opt for him to play with the other doggies or be in a run by himself with a couple of breaks for potty time. And there's a location in D.C.
Lance can stay with us! I bet Frosty'd love having a playmate!!
hahah I was going to suggest the same thing! If the cat thing doesn't work out I've got two little corgs here waiting for a friend to play with ;)
Chris and Avyon, what city do you live, in Virginia?
Fairfax area. 30 min from DC depending on what time, route and who you talk to LOL
We live in Ottumwa, Iowa. I was thinking you guys lived in Des Moines, but have just realized that was my other buddy that was talking to me about a corgi named Lance. Forgot you live in Chicago. That would be a little out of the way for you lol!!
I am already suffering seperation anxiety....we are going on a cruise to Alaska the begining of Juen and will be away from our babies for 10 days.....sad, sad, sad....:(
We took our kids to VT after planning not to and getting an OK from my gents to drop them off on the way lol. They were just so good at the guilt trip that morning while I packed things to put in the car. Had the "Watcha doin mom? Where we going mom? Are we going to play mom?!" and of course the guilty snuggles from Roxi because she thought we were moving again lol.
