Adding a Rescue to the family possibly, Needs Advice----- Update: Let me introduce Tucker!!
Came across a white and red pem in a shelter near us. We took Lance to go meet Tucker this afternoon and the meeting seemed to go ok. Lance and Tucker both didnt pay much attention to each other!!!!
They did sniff some, although Tucker seemed a bit shy, but he just would back away, didnt make any noises or do anything other than back away. The volunteers at the shelter seemed to think it went well.
He was temperment tested and passed. My daughter and I met with him in a room at the shelter, which unfortunately was the kitchen, you know what was on Tuckers mind...food, lol. He did seem happy to see us when we called him to us and wanted to give lots of kisses. :)
He was dropped off in the shelter runs by someone and just left :( Apparently he had male issues and it wouldn't go down, so they had to take him to the vet and got it taken care of, which they did, they said he was fine now. Poor boy, they think maybe he was used for breeding :( He has some scars on his face around his eyes...at first I thought it was just black fur, but looking closer looks like scars. They said possible flea bite scars or maybe from breeding gone bad??
One of the volunteers tried adopting him but her other dog did not like Tucker at all :( Im hoping the scars on his face isn't from an attack, and now hes scared of other dogs. You think they would be honest about that. We definately would have to have Tucker come to the house to see how the meeting goes here. I know it will take some time for adjustments, I just hope that they are suited for each other.
Hopefully Tucker is more submissive than Lance is.
We are going back tonight with the whole family since my daughter and hubby couldnt join us this afternoon. Any thoughts or feedback would be great to hear. I just feel so bad for Tucker. I want this to go as smoothly as possible, and seeing Im new to having two dogs, one being a rescue I would appreciate advice.

Good luck! It is hard to predict how an added adult dog will be but just take your time about it. Sam has suggested a long walk before taking them home together and I think that would be a wise way to go. Tucker will not show his true personality for a couple weeks so you just have to be really slow about leaving them alone together. Hope it works out!

Thanks Bev! So once we have taken them on a long walk how would we introduce them to the house? Do we not allow Tucker to go in certain rooms at first or do we let the Tucker and Lance explore the rooms together?

I have only done this a couple times so maybe Sam will comment but I just let them loose in the house to sniff around. Watch for resource guarding and feed them in separate areas if not in their own crates at first. Sparty is a major "foodie" so I fed Misty in her kennel for a long time so he would not chase her off. If you see some attitude, I would leash the more aggressive one. You can let them drag it around or attach it to you depending on how they are. I have only had a problem once and that was when we added our grand dog and I already knew Sparty was not thrilled with the addition. It sounds like Tucker might be a less dominant dog which could be helpful. How is Lance? Has he had another dog in the house?

I definately know that we will feed them seperately as Lance doesnt share food well :( Lance has had his buddies come and play at the house with him as well as his cousin dog Marcus. We used to watch Marcus for a few days at a time, and they did play nice. Although, if Lance was getting on Marcus's nerves he would nicely tell Lance and Lance would calm down. I am sooo hoping Tucker is less dominant because that is the only way I think it will work out. Makes me nervous to think about since this is the first time I would own two dogs at once. I will definately watch out for resource guarding, which hopefully wont be a big issue. I do know that he will try that with my daughgter from time to time and I have taught her not to allow him to do that as well as I dont allow it either and it helps.
Lances favorite toy, the waggle (where you stick food on each end), is going to have to be a really special treat now, and Tucker and Lance will have to be seperated for that as well.

Ooh if he's the one I think he is on petfinder he is a very pretty boy! I've never added a second adult dog myself, but I would have them meet in a neutral place - maybe along your usual walk route? And then walk them back to the house together. I think after the initial exploration of the house I would probably limit the area they can have access to, just so you are able to observe them at all times.

The info I got on Tucker tonight says he was attacked by another dog :( I sure hope it doesnt ruin it for Tucker liking other dogs. Apparently it was the other dog that didnt like Tucker. Hopefully Tucker will have a good attitude about other dogs. We are waiting for a call to set up a home inspection, which really means we are going to see how the dogs initially get along at the house. Tucker seems like such a sweetheart. I hope him and Lance can be buddies.

Tucker might be used to other males and so it may not be a big issue for him. I also would limit the space and seperate if you can't watch them at first. The biggest issue I had with Teddy and Jackson was marking but then they weren't house trained BUT they are the sweetest most gentle dogs that came from a puppy mill. Tucker may have to learn many things if he was used for just breeding (how to play,how much fun it is to frap,life as a corgi not as a stud). Just go slow with all you do and remember it takes at least 30 days for a rescue to adjust! I was just watching Teddy play with a ball tonight...it took him months to even pick one up. Also use a martingale collar for safety in case he spooks.

Thanks Jane....and he is a sweetheart too. Do you think the fact that Lance and Tucker pretty much ignored each other over 40 minutes is a good sign? Lance sniffed him....Tucker got spooked and jumped back twice but thats all he did....they were nose to nose at one point at the end. We had them meet outside the shelter. Lance definately noticed all the other dogs coming out...but didnt bark like he normally would, non stop!!
