I'll be absent during the first couple months that I'll be obtaining my 10 week old Corgi, and he'll be living with my Father. Is this okay? Will be be able to attach to me when I return?

I'll be getting a Corgi April 3rd, which could not come soon enough! I'm very excited; however my job decided to place me on a work trip between mid April to early June. I know having a 10 week Corgi in a new home is very stressful and a lot of work, and I'm afraid I'll be absent during this time. My new puppy will be living with my father for two months and he's willing to take good care of him, but when I return, will he be okay moving again into my place?

1. Will he attach to me without too much stress?

2. Is moving twice too much in a few months?

3. Would my breeder be willing to hold onto him for another two months instead?

Any feedback would be wonderful; am I worried over nothing, or should I consider not taking the pet altogether. I want to be considerate of the needs of the puppy and also want to see him soon.

Thank you

Not knowing anything about your living situation, your father, the puppy, or the breeder your question is hard to answer.  There are too many variables here.  If you have a good, experienced breeder, I would discuss the situation with the breeder.  They will know the right questions to ask you and have the best interest of the puppy at heart.

Thank you for your response, Anna. I've asked my breeder if she'd be willing to hold onto him for another two months and if that's the best option, but I haven't received any feedback yet and I'd like to have a second opinion.

Assuming my father can take proper care and do his research (he'll be taking him to training during my absence), will it be a problem if I come back two months later and take over as the leader? What factors do I need to be aware of?

If you do end up having your Dad watch him can he watch him at your house or can they visit there while you are away so he sees it as a safe place and gets used to the smells and such of his new home until you get back? If he eats some meals there and takes some walks there I would imagine it would be easier for him to adjust when you return to "his" new home. Also, can you get him a blanket, toy or stuffed animal that you and he play with that he can use for security while you are away? Not sure if that is the best advice, but it worked to help my dog adjust after adoption. Sorry you have to go away now! I'm sure it will be behind you sooner than you realize, but still hard.

If the pup is properly handled and socialized during those two months, you will have a good basis from  which to start the new adjustment.  Plan to take a few days off when you bring the pup home to help him settle in the new environment and adjust to your new routine.  Keep in mind that those two months are crucial in the socialization area.  A young pup is quite demanding of time and patience and will need gentle, consistent guidance.  Only you can tell if your father is right for the job.  I recommend Jack Volhard and Melissa Bartlett's book " What all good dogs should know, the sensible way to train" The book is short, funny, but very good.  best wishes.

Has your Dad had dogs from pups and trained them? Can he follow what you are asking him to do? Can he bring the pup to your home for an occasional visit ? I would also buy some fleece blankets and cut into 18" squares (after washing) and send one to wherever your pup is every couple weeks after you have slept with the square so there's lots of good "you smells"  on the blanket:) I would also send this in an airtight zip-lock so the smells stay in the square. I would also have some toys go to wherever he stays:) Also a collar!

If your breeder will have the pup in her house then I think this would be good...I have done this in the past and it has worked well. Plus you should have a house trained pup when you do get home.

Do what feels "right" to you!

Thank you for all of your feedback, it's been extremely helpful. I cannot guarantee how well my Father will take care of him, so I will request to wait for another litter when I return from my work trip. It breaks my heart as I fell in love with the little guy, but I need to ensure he'll be taken good care of. Thank you for taking the time to respond to my concerns.
