Wynn had bladder stones about a year ago and now they're back. He was to the vet 2 weeks ago and was put on antibiotics since no stones could be seen. Talked with another vet this AM and evidently the Struvite bladder stones need to found using a radiograph and if he does have he will need surgery to get rid of this type of stone. Anyone have experience with these stones? Wynn is 11 but healthy so I will need to have this done unless the vet advises differently after his Tuesday appointment.

Vicky...I am assuming that when the Corgis lay like they do there isn't much air flow. I also started them both on Kefir because they are both on a better working antibiotic for their "problems" but also the will kill the good bacteria.
I was really worried that one or the other would have a bad report and SOOOOO glad they will be fine. At 14 and 11...you never know what could happen.
Fourteen! That just amazes me! It sounds like corgis have a track record for longevity. What with the Gersheps, the retrievers, and the doberman, I've never had a dog that lived longer than about 12. Cassie, though, at ten is still chasing around like a pup with Ruby, and so I have some hope that she'll hang in there till a ripe old age.
Jane...that is good news indeed! I had no idea dogs could get those same infections (male and female) that us humans can get.
Julia...I had to use a raised food and water bowl for Max because of the IVDD in his neck. Katie and the cats used the same water bowl. Katie use to cough and choke but I never associated it with the raised water bowl. Brady joined our pack shortly before Max passed and he kept getting his tags caught on the stand and would dump water all over. After Max passed I put the bowls back down on the floor and Katie no longer chokes and coughs when she drinks water.
Vicky....generally the larger the breed the shorter the life span. I love Irish wolfhounds as much as I love corgis and I would have another one in a heartbeat except for one thing...their life span is so short. The average is 7-8 years and you are very lucky if they make 10. My female did make it to 10, I came home from work one day and there she was on the couch...she had passed in her favorite spot. My male was 7. We all know that how ever long we have with them it's not long enough but my heart can't take such short times with wolfhounds.
I know of corgis that have reached ripe old ages of 17. Max was 13.5, Katie is 12 and still going strong. My rott/shep mix only made it to12.
Yah...we had friends who loved Great Danes. They figured the dog was in its dotage if it reached the age of 9. With the shepherds, I always figured 9 to 11 years when I got a pup...sort of trying to brace myself in advance.... :-( But seriously: it is a BIG commitment, so you want to think through how long a dog is likely to be around before you take one in. My last shepherd was 12 when she passed...and she really was in bad shape by then, poor old gal.
Wynn is still having issues. I was going to take him to ER vet yesterday but a coworker texted her vet for me and I got the same info from her as I did from my vet so I will be making an appointment for Tuesday. Still blood in urine and showed some signs of pain yesterday but I didn't realize the pain symptoms till her vet suggested a pain med....hopefully soon this will get resolved!!!!!!!!!! Poor Wynn!
Oh dear. That IS frustrating! I'm sorry to hear it. I hope he springs back soon.
Jane...I am so sorry to hear Wynn is still having problems. Prayers they can figure this out and get him back to his normal self.
Thanks Linda,
The vet my coworker uses sounded just like my vet and wasn't alarmed by it as long as he was peeing. I will make an appointment with this new vet for Tuesday...he sure eats, drinks, pees and poops fine....it's just the blood. The vet yesterday suggested an antibiotic like Clavamox should be added. Will see Tuesday. The woman sending me this actually sent me the texts the vet sent her! I wonder if he was in pain the other day that he shivered a couple times...she also said he should have a pain med...maybe this is more common than I think??????
Hmmm... This sounds like a smart idea. I dunno...I personally am such a confirmed skeptic that I regularly seek second opinions -- especially if someone proposes some drastic treatment (like surgery) or if the ailment looks like it might be serious. Good luck! Hope to hear what you find out.
