Hello all!!

I recently joined, been trolling for a few days trying to soak up all info!

I am interested in getting a Pembroke corgi for myself, I live with my parents (I am a college student), and live in MD. I was hoping that someone on here had personal experience with any breeders in the area (surrounding states as well) that they might recommend for me? I've seen these two sites: http://www.pembrokecorgi.org/memberlistaction.cfm and http://www.pwccp.org/Breeders/Breeders.htm but I'm not sure which breeder(s) to contact! I don't want to contact all of them, that would be confusing trying to keep track.

I would like to get a red and white male (but personality > gender, so female would be fine too), and have been drooling over pictures on here and elsewhere.
I would hope to possibly dabble in agility and/or flyball with corgi. As well as possibly have the dog come along with me when I ride out on trail rides (horseback riding). I also work at a Daycamp/Boarding/Training facility and would be brining pup along with me to work.

After seeing some puppies that have come in to our daycamp who have had little to no socialization and/or handling I want to make sure the puppy I get is well socialized and handled by the time I pick him/her up.

Anyhow, parents are on board but I would be main caregiver. I currently have an 8 year old mini aussie x that was my first dog and we adopted him from a rescue when he was 10 months old. Now I want to go the puppy route! Also have 5 cats that were adopted/rescued/bottlefed ranging in age from 10 years - 9 months.

Please ask any questions needed! I tried to supply as much info as possible.

Also any suggestions and tips would be very welcome!!

I don't know any of the Maryland breeders.    We recently met a Hum'nbird Corgi (West Virginia) and she was super sweet, friendly, and very calm in a crowded environment. And a fluff.  She did love belly rubs!   I don't know how far that is from you.

I can highly recommend Kandy Boll (Corgard) in PA (Reading area)  if you are willing to make a road trip.  I don't know if she has any litters planned.

Thanks so much for the info! I am definitely wiling to make a drive. :) I only looked up corgard's area and that doesn't seem too far away. I will definitely look into the both of them. :D

Hi Grace!  My boyfriend and I live in MD and are hoping to get a Pembroke too.  The breeder that we've been in contact with is located in Culpepper, VA (Carrie from Dalarno), however she doesn't have any puppies at the moment.  She did tell us about a local corgi event in MD this Saturday where there will be other breeders in attendance.  In fact the people that are hosting this event are breeders themselves, so I think it'll be a nice opportunity to be able to talk to all of them in person.

Here's the link for info on the event. http://www.pwccp.org/Match.htm We'll be there so hopefully we'll see you there too!

Wow thanks so much! I will definitely be going. I can't wait to talk to some of the breeders and get one step closer to a puppy!! I hope to see you there. :D

Do most breeders not like to use email??

I've contacted a few from the Potomac club using my email. Simply stating that I would like to add a puppy to my family (some info about my other pets and people), and asking if they had any litters available this year as I have a lot of time now, and will be starting college again in the spring. Also to ask me any other questions they feel necessary to ask.

I haven't gotten any replies from two emails I've sent! One was a week and a half ago, and the other a few days ago. :(

I know I'm probably just being impatient to get a reply, but I'd like to make some headway on at least finding a breeder who will work with me.

I think we need to add this to the FAQ here; almost NO breeder is going to be 100% reply rate on their e-mails. If they're busy showing or doing dog sports, or taking care of their human families, or just very busy with their dogs and life in general, e-mails quickly go on the back burner.

The best way to make a good impression AND be sure that you have some one-on-one discussion with your breeder is to call. What I also like about calling is that a person can't "hide" behind words - ask them about their health clearances done on the dogs, what the conditions are like, what their puppy socialisation protocols are... But only when you know that they've got time to discuss! Ask if they're free to chat as you're interested in getting a puppy, and if they are, then fire away. I think conscientious and good breeders will always prefer phone interviews and for their potential buyers to be well-educated on the breed, than to just operate through faceless e-mails.

So yeah, try to call at a decent hour on the weekend, perhaps, or throughout the weekday if it's possible that they are not working. Calling always has a higher success rate for responses (obviously). It may seem very forward and blunt, but you gotta do what you gotta do!

Ok, thank you! I wasn't sure which is the generally accepted protocol. I totally understand the faceless email thing, I can understand why they wouldn't necessarily reply to those. They probably get a lot of emails but no follow through.

I will definitely make sure to call!! Thanks for the info!

Some of them are absolutely awful about email. You might try calling them if they list their number. I think I waited 3 weeks and then 5 weeks on another when I was looking for Luke, and both offered me dogs so I don't think I was doing anything wrong lol.

Thanks for the info! I will try to call and follow up on my email! I'm sure they get a lot of emails without people actually following through with a purchase/adoption.

Thanks for the suggestion!

It appears from their website that they also breed horses, did you happen to see that when you picked your puppy up? That would be great, then the dogs would be well socialized with horses as well.
