Breeders that don't dock
Hi there. :] I'm looking to bring home a corgi sometime within the next year or so, and figured I'd start doing my research now. Recently I've become intrigued with Pembrokes with tails, after seeing pictures of ones from countries where tail docking is banned. I was wondering if anyone knew of any breeders here in the US that didn't dock tails as well? I know it'd probably be pretty rare, since most breeders breed for show, and tails would be non standard... But if anyone knows of any breeders that don't, please let me know. I live in Southern California, but I'm open to breeders from farther away if they're reputable and willing to ship. If fate would allow it, I would love a fluffy boy with a tail. :]

Shou, consider talking with a few reputable breeders of your choice, telling them you would like an undocked puppy, if one is born in one of their upcoming litters and asking how often that may happen. Say that you will pay for that puppy in full, as soon as it is born (since docking is done very early) . Put down a generous deposit on this future puppy. I see no reason why any reasonable breeder would not oblige you, as long as you are not criticizing their ways, but they would be leery of doing this if they thought you may change your mind. I think this strategy would give you a better chance. If not successful, get a Cardigan, they're great :-)

The only problem with having them not dock a tail (or at least it was for me as I had found one that would not dock a pup for me) is that now you have a Pem with a tail and have to take it no matter what the personality may be...just a thought.

Plus, most breeders don't begin to decide who they are keeping to go on with until well past docking age. So unless they have an obvious pet-quality pup (a mismark, or a fluff), they don't know who they are keeping and who they are passing on. And as you say, you then are stuck with the pup. And it may not be the personality you want.

Can breeders tell if a puppy is a fluffy when they're that young? Because I really would love a fluffy boy. Haha. Tail would be a plus.

Thanks for your suggestion, Anna. Taking into consideration what others have said, I guess I'd rather have a docked puppy than one whose personality might not match what I'm looking for. Plus I feel like breeders might not be willing to do that either, just in case the one they choose not to dock, is one that they would've ended up keeping. So probably I'll just get a docked Pembroke first. And who knows, maybe one day I'll get a Cardigan too. :]

Shou, sometimes a breeder won't dock a couple pups or a whole litter if the litter is a bit distressed and they don't think they can handle it. That does NOT mean the pups are doomed to have health problems. They might have come a little early and have been tiny, or there might have been an issue with the mom's milk, or any number of things. It's rare but it does sometimes happen. When you start searching breeders, you might mention that you'd be happy with an undocked puppy if anyone hears of one that is for some reason left with its tail.
There are also a few natural bobs born. I have no idea how common they are.

I have a fluffy whose tail was almost not docked because his mother died when he was three days old and the litter had to be bottle fed. He actually has 1/4 of a tail because (wait for it) the vet didn't take enough off. Twice. Poor H.! He does love to wag what little of a tail he has though.
I'm sure I'm in the minority on this site, but I much prefer docked-to-the-butt corgis.

Thanks, Beth. From how few tailed corgis I've seen, that seems to be pretty rare (which is just as well since having a distressed litter can't be a good thing). But I'll be sure to mention it just in case. :]

If you were interested in a cardi, Joanna at Blacksheep cardigans just had a litter. The dam is a fluffy so I assume there will probably be some fluffs in the litter. She is on the east coast though. :/
