Back in December we adopted Taffy, who was listed as a cardigan welsh corgi by the shelter, but they've misidentified dogs before. As she has settled in and her true personality became more evident, I'm wondering if she's a pembroke that kept her tail.

Taffy is 22 lb, 2.5 year old black-headed tricolor female. She is 12.5 inches to the top of her shoulder, and 20.5 inches from the front of her chest to the back of her hind leg. Her ears fold over at the tip (possibly due to poor nutrition, we don't know her story since she was picked up as a stray), and her tail is held in an arc.

She is aloof around strangers and cautious near strange dogs, but a complete goof around the family- she will get in the belly rub position if you get within two feet of her while she's laying down, and warms up to people quickly. Here are some pictures of her:

Can anyone tell what my Taffy girl is?!

Looks like a mix to me.  Her legs look too long to be full corgi, the black/tan in corgis usually has a clear separation (not a gradient between the two), and her face is a little weird for either a pem or cardi-- of course, she could be just be a really carelessly bred corgi.  But, I'm leaning towards pem mix because of her fur type. :]

Take a look at pictures of tris. There are many, many with the color shading from black to tan. In fact, I own one!! When Rocky was a pup, his colors were pretty distinctly divided and with much more black than tan, but as he's gotten older (he's 3), his tan has crept up and shades into his very black back. Many tris are like that, esp red-headed tris, which Rocky is.

Taffy does look like a very cute mix with Corgi in there somewhere.

Hmm. Every picture I've ever seen of a tri has lacked a gradient. Well, oops!

Here's mine.  There's tan in her black, and black in her tan...

Yep, here's Rocky, along with his sis, Rosie and their cocker cousin, Buffy. His black and tan mix on his legs, along his side and on his head.

You can do genetic testing for under$100 if you really want to know. I have a friend that did it with her shelter dog and all our guesses were way off. I would guess a Pem was involved somewhere too.
What a cute little stray she was. She is a great little package with a lovely face.
She is cute as she can be!!  Gorgeous face with beautiful markings!  And lucky to have found her forever home!!

I'm considering buying the genetic test- I'll need to save up a little for the test, though.

Jack russel/pembroke might be a possibility- there is a CoJack puppy just down the street, but they take after the terrier more than the corgi. I guess I'll just have to see.

Save your $$. Spend it on balls and toys. Who cares? That's a beautiful animal with a great physique for a dog. I know this is heresy around her, but when nobody's looking, I sometimes fantasize about a dog with slightly longer legs. Not that I can outwalk our corgis..
Depends on the person you're asking. Yea its nice to know what you have. Beside being curious, health reason (if you have a breed with 5 breed mix and 3 or 4 of those breeds have major health problems they're prone to it makes take action now to help prevent that. Also each breed has a "set" temperament which can explain behavior and training methods that need to be used (If we need a firm hand or not but I still would recommend + Reinforcement anyways)

I had my Girl DNA tested (Wisdom Panel by MarsVet) I thought she was a Border Collie x Shiba mix. Turns out she's a Cattle Dog x American Eskimo. It explains her personality, trainable, and healthy problems that might happen.
She has a similar body type (even with the limp ear!) as Wrigley. I'm pretty positive he's a Corgi/ Jack Russell mix.
