Chewing on Furniture - Help!
So I have completely jinxed myself by not saying that Alwyn doesn't chew on our furniture in the house and just having a complete foot fetish by stealing our shoes, sneakers, socks, etc. Well....we came home today and were shocked to find that he was busy while we were gone. He had chewed a corner cabinet and there are horizontal teeth markings along a door casing and a piece of panelling. I know he's tried chewing on the "doggie" gates before and we used a sour apple spray. That worked for a good day then I think he became immune to the taste and beavered his way back to it. That eventually stopped, I think he got bored. Now we come home and all of a sudden he's gone chew crazy on the wood in the kitchen. Does anyone have any advice, helpful hints or suggestions of things they have done when their corgis have done this behavior? We live in an apartment so we're not exactly thrilled to put any big remodeling investment let alone have our landlord find out when we do move. I appreciate all of your help in advance!

Yes, confinement. I'm not sure how old Alwyn is, but chewing is a behavior often outgrown. Confine him until then. If he chews on a puppy corral, that would be much better than chewing on the doorframes and furniture. Crate, X-pen, whatever. Confine the child.

Wish I could help. I've raised many corgis before Rafa, but he was the first rescue (rehomed) corgi that I got as a puppy. My other rescues were adults. Rafa was bred by a corgi "kennel" that would never be on the PWCCA recommended breeder list. One look at the bill of sale would make any dog lover shudder. Then he was owned by a teenage boy for 2 months who knew nothing about raising a puppy--esp. a strong willed corgi! The boy's parents kept him outdoors all day/night and put him on a restrictive diet. He was all ribs when we got him at 16 wks. old. He's super loving and smart. I was able to potty train him in a few weeks. We got over the hurdle with Lucy resenting his presence. But, for the first time I have a puppy who deliberately looks to chew on EVERYTHING BUT his toys! He goes through a p-nut butter kong in a minute. At first it was like xmas with new toys. Now I think he's bored with toys and it's off to furniture, phones, remotes, diet coke, potted plants, rugs...you name it. He knows it's wrong. I correct him. I give time out, crate him, and even resorted to keeping him on a short lead at my side. But, the minute he's free he looks for mischief. He seems to love negative attention. Maybe he got so little attention before us, that any attention will do. I know he'll outgrow this, and it can't come soon enough! He was also way behind in his shots which postponed his beginning obedience classes. We neutered him at 5 mo. & I enrolled him in classes. I can't wait for them to start!!! LOL.
PS Our house is not easy to cordon off with puppy gates inside or out. He gets plenty of exercise and walks well on his lead with Lucy twice daily.

@ Doug & Jessie, & all with Corgis with appetites for more than food and toys!
Had to post these two photos. I took them minutes after my rant about Rafa eating everything but his chew toys. He wore me out and I suppose himself. Now he looks like the angel that I know he'll be in a few months. BTW, If I used tin foil, my entire house, inside and out, would be very shiny indeed! Good night good friends & sleep tight.

Gromit went after two chair legs on our dining table chairs. We were not happy about this at all as the damage was pretty severe. I sanded and refinished the damaged areas and then sprayed bitter apple on them. Apparently for Gromit, bitter apple is a condiment because he went after the chair legs again. Grrr....
More repairs and this time at someone's suggestion, don't know who, I wrapped some tinfoil around the damaged legs. I've seen where Gromit has nosed the tinfoil but apparently the metallic taste/texture is unpleasant to him and he's left the legs alone for a couple of months now (knock on wood). Tinfoil chair legs are not that stylish but we'll live it for now and pull off when company comes over.
Some tinfoil applied to the areas that seem to be of interest to Alwyn might put him off and seeking out more dog appropriate toys. Gromit's been given the dried cow hoofs and he loves chewing those more than anything now. I worry about his teeth but so far, no problems and I think the hooves appeal to him more than anything else he's been given to chew on.

I can relate. Baron has gone from shoes to molding to now eating the linolium floor in the living room. He can also destroy a toy in 30 seconds and a peanut butter filled kong only lasts a couple of minutes. I broke down and bought bully sticks which also were gone in seconds, Good luck with Alwyn. I'm hoping Baron will outgrow this stage as well. He also likes the taste of bitter apple.

Do u have a crate? That would be better than a gate so he dosnt chew on that. If not I suggest two toys one is a kong toy but its a ball. Put the cheese or peanut butter in the ver back so he can smell it bt can't get to it. There's also little ridges so u can cram it in there to keep him interested. Another is if he likes ice. Its a bone filled with a soft material and u stick it in the freezer and it feels good on there gums. Teddy was never a chewer. He only wanted his toys and treats but I was prepared before I got him lol he has always been calm and I'm blessed that he never he wasn't a chewer

@rebecca- You are soooo lucky. Rafa chews on EVERYTHING. I think he's learning to like Bitter Apple, which was our last line of defense.

I hope he gets better! It will just take some time for him to grow out of it. They also make a bitter spray but its maid from tea tree oil. Non toxic and it worked for our one pup. It got it from walmart. I believe its called odor band

If you don't crate him there's a product I used that works quite well to stop chewing. It's called Bitter Apple and I believe you can get it at Petco or Petsmarts. Unfortunately it's more reactive than proactive. You spray its on the areas where your puppy been chewing. It has a very bad taste and most dog will stop chewing in that area. You can try to spray areas where you think they might go after next but that's always hit or miss.

Thank you so very much everyone for your helpful advice! For those of you who had suggested the Bitter Apple product, we have tried that and Alwyn considers that a delicacy. I cannot fathom for the life of me why in the world he could even consider the taste of it even remotely tasteful. I'll share a funny story to go with that. I was spraying the product all along the doggie gates one day and forgot to wash my hands. I somehow touched my mouth or lips with the same hand/fingers that I used to spray the product with and low and behold...some of the product got on my mouth. That stuff literally does NOT come off! I was freaking out, dry heaving, panicking because the taste was so horrible and no matter what I did I couldn't make it go away! My fiance laughed at me but didn't learn his lesson and accidentally did the same thing a few days later and had the same reaction. So then it was my turn to sit and laugh. However, revenge was imminent because I gave him a quick kiss and the darn thing left a mark on me and the nightmare began again. To this day I still can't wrap my head around how Alwyn and some of your dogs don't seem to mind the taste.
Jane - He has a Kong and we've filled it with peanut butter, Ziggies, carrots, etc. He'll go nuts over it for a day or so then have nothing to do with it. He's a picky little guy!
Lucy - You are so sweet to share your story on Rafa post pics of him (especially on his best behavior), thank you! He and Alwyn seem to be one in the same when it comes to attention span / interest in toys or anything that chew-acceptable for that matter. I appreciate the tin foil method, will definitely try!
Doug - My goodness, I sure hope Alwyn doesn't chew our furniture like Gromit did with yours. Thank you as well for the advice on using tin foil in the areas that he's been chewing on. It'll be a bit difficult to use it in the corners of the cabinets but I'll somehow tape it appropriately. By the time I'm finished though I'm sure the kitchen will soon enough look like the Tin Man's house.

Rebecca - Yes he is crated but I feel bad leaving him in there for long periods of time. If he's not in our direct site lately because of his behavior, he'll be in the crate. He's crazy about ice and we give it to him as often as possible. You mentioned a bone that's filled with a soft material that you can put in the freezer - do you know what it's called or its brand? Thanks for the help!

Ohhh Kelly you do realize that saying "we need to go to Tractor Supply for big tasty bones" in this house will result in a tractor shopping spree, right? LOL! They're just in the process of building one down the road from us too. In all seriousness though, we will definitely look for those - thank you! =)
Btw I think you've officially given him another nickname with "Piranha", I like that!
