So I've been reading a little bit about clicker training. It seems like it's really effective. I was wondering if anyone has tried and had success or if it's even necessary?

Thanks :]

I love clicker training and recommend it. I still use the clicker occasionally now that mine have had 2-3 classes but I usually just click with my mouth now to let them know how well they are doing so they still hear it and get rewarded by the click but in a different way:)
Hi Nikki and Luca, YES :)

thank you Jane and Sam! I'll definitely consider it.

I don't think I have access to any classes right now. I checked at PetSmart and they are in between trainers right now. :[

You don't need to do the classes to do this but you do have to figure out how? when to use the clicker and be very consistent:)

mmk. I'll def do some research before i try it :] I only read a small article about it tonight. and it was kinda confusing .

Here is the article.

clicker training is amazing! its completely positive which i love and teddy looks forward to learning. u really got to "charge" up the clicker so he knows what the click means and once he does try it in a park so he will learn to focus on you even if there is distractions. when clicker training use a treat that is super tasty, such as boiled chicken or hot dogs. once you have her to focus on u in that kind of environment, you will always have her attention:)

Love the Clicker! Well worth learning!
The most important thing to remember is the click/treat but it has to be right when you are getting the "right" behavior. Such as if you say look at me and the minute his eyes look you in the eye you click/treat or if you told him to sit then the minute his butt hits the ground you click/treat. What happens is if you click at the wrong time you are reinforcing something you don't want. You will want both the clicker and treat ready to give. I suggest a sweatshirt or carpenters apron to carry the treats and to keep a couple in your hand when you ask him to do something. If I had time I would try to do a video but I have to get to work....

Clicker training works, but I have trouble managing the clicker, treat, dog and hand signals all at once so I rarely use it.  I use a marker word ("yes") much like a clicker, though it's not as effective.

I reserve the clicker for hard-to-train behaviors, so for example I have used it with some success to try to lessen the amount of time Jack spends sniffing the ground for lost treats instead of focusing when we are in agility class.  For regular everyday training I find it awkward to handle.

Thanks everyone for all the feedback! :]  when should i start the training? when i pick her up, she'll be 6 weeks old.  I don't want to overwhelm her with potty training and getting used to my apartment by adding clicky noises lol

Personally, with young puppies I do capture training (where you catch them doing something good and then say the command as they are doing it and praise them).  Capture training is not especially conducive to the clicker.  So for instance, if you crouch down low and clap your hands and smile, most puppies will come running towards you at full puppy-speed.   AFTER pup starts running towards you, you start saying "Come come come come come!" in a very cheery voice and then praise with good girl when she gets to you.  That is not really how clicker training works.

Similarly, if you are standing and pup walks up to you, most pups will sit down to look up at you.  When you see the butt going to the ground, you say "sit" in a normal voice and then praise, praise, praise.  Most pups will pick up "come" and "sit" using this method in just a couple days.

I would wait to introduce the clicker til puppy is around four months old or so and starts to have a brain.  Clicker training can make some dogs very "sharp"  (rapidly trying new behaviors to see which brings on the click) and some pups are very hyper to begin with, so you'll need to play it by ear.

That's just my two cents; someone else probably will tell you something very different that worked equally well for them.   :)

that sounds like a great way to start at least :D I definitely appreciate your two cents!
