Do you feed your corgi food with corn in? Do you read the labels?

I'm just interested in how many people use dry dog food with corn in. I do not feed corn as it is only a filler and I believe and have read many articles that corn in not good for dogs. My dogs coats are beautiful and I think this is the main reason. I also send along and strongly urge new pup owners to not give corn fed food also. I know that at least one owner has gotten a comment from her vet on her pups beautiful coat.

And this I agree with 100%. I mentioned the ads for Beneful not to pick on Beneful, but because what they show on their ads and on their bags pictures is most certainly NOT what is in the food!

I was personally very surprised when I read the labels on the weight-reducing options of brands I thought I trusted. None of them had a protein source as the #1 ingredient. Then I went online and got calorie counts, and found that Iams' Lamb and Rice (with protein as #1) actually has FEWER calories than their weight-reducing food, and not too much fat either (though I know dogs metabolize fat differently than people). We switched and are happy with the results.

I too read labels, on food and treats. I am more forgiving of a treat that is given a few times a week than food. I would never feed food with sugar, for example, and was shocked to see some foods contain it. Yet we do feed one treat with a very small amount of sugar because it truly does seem to get rid of the meat scent from his breath.
Thank you Jane. Like you, I didn't think twice about what I fed my dogs before Sidney came into our lives. It's good advice to read the labels, research brands we are interested in, and make the decision that is right for us and our four-legged family members. I feel that some of us are getting a little too passionate about this subject and we need to step back, take a deep breath, and move on to other topics. Thank you Jane for giving us the opportunity to share and have open debate, I'm sure some of us have learned quite a bit. And thank you to everyone else who took the time to contribute!
Bear eats Iams smart puppy formula - food and biscuits for treats. He's perfectly healthy, has a pretty coat and I could set my watch by his bowel movements. He gets one scrambled egg on Sundays as a treat and for some extra protein. He's happy, healthy and funny.

My grandfather was a fox hunter and had beagles in a pen by the barn. They got the scraps from breakfast and dinner and were smart, healthy dogs. It was often my job as the visiting grandchild to take out the leftover breakfast biscuits, sausage, etc in a small aluminum pie plate after each meal.

As far as the more expensive and raw food diets that have become so popular - I wonder if life expectancy has increased since this craze had begun.
