Dogs who hate being petted
I think this has come up before in other conversations.
Maddie loves being petted. She likes nothing better than to cuddle up next to me or my husband on the couch. If I stop petting her, she'll nudge me with her muzzle or paw (I usually ignore her til she's quiet when she does this, but it is cute). She flips over for belly rubs. She'll crawl on top of me if I'm home sick from work and lying on the couch.
But Jack, oh Jack! He's like a six-year-old boy who has decided hugs mortify him. He'll be laying there, looking soooo cute, and if I go up to give him a fussing, he'll frequently run backwards and look at me like "What the heck?!" and grab a toy to play. If I get down on the floor to pet him, he runs for a tennis ball. Once a week or so he'll come and lie on my lap for a nice long neck-rub. He dislikes (but tolerates) being groomed. Yet if we're out for a walk and someone stops to say hi, he's all over them giving kisses and trying to reach their face. He's a therapy dog and loves his nursing home visits.
I have never met a dog so indifferent to physical affection! If you do pet him, he prefers a good hard scratch on the backside or the top of the head to being stroked or fussed over. He's such a boy!
I've gotten used to it, but when he gives me the eyes.....
...it's so hard to resist!
Who else lives with a dog who would rather play then get petted? Silly dogs.

Yes, Jack is actually quite big; around 35 pounds. He does have some sabling on his back and head. I agree their faces are very similar!

The other photo was strikingly similar to me. I included new ones of Lucy that I thought really showed the resemblance. I just posted them so I don't know if you got to see them. Let me know. Jack's a beauty! One of my first corgis, Rookie, had the sabling around the ears and forehead. To me it was a very noble look!!! haha. I don't know if you saw a photo of Rookie swimming and one with my now 28 year old daughter who was just a baby. He was guarding her. Don't you just love Corgis. I could look at Corgis all day, and sometimes it feels like I do!

What a picture...I would want to pet him too! All my dogs love to be petted and so if I pet one I have several trying to get under my hand for attention they work their way in but do sit nicely while they try to get their head in just the right place!

my dog would def. rather play than be pet...its sad, cause he gives me those eyes too...i just want to give him a bunch of kisses.

Finnigan is a lot like that. if you walk up to pet him he'll flop over on his back and let you rub his belly but if you get on your knees to do it then he thinks it's play time. If you pet his face he'll get more and more excited and start doing his yawn-talking. So really, if he's on the floor and you join him there, he assumes it's time to play.
I taught him to give me kisses but most of the time he doesn't want to and will avoid looking at me then finally give in and give a little yip/whine as he licks my face then retreats.
If I'm sitting on the couch and he comes to lay at my feet I can stroke him and he'll be lovey but I think it's just because he's already timed at that point.
When he meets people on walks he gets extremely excited and pulls to go see them then licks them all over and wiggles around with excitement while they try to pet him.
Just in the past couple months he has added cuddle time to his nightly ritual. I lay on the couch to read before bed and he comes up and lays on me and goes to sleep. He'll start out on me then usually ends up with his head on my shoulder and his body along side mine, laying on his back like a baby. He loves this cuddle time and get's into a deep snoring sleep. I can kiss him and pet him all I want. When I decide I'm ready for bed he barely even wakes up when I try to rouse him. I end up having to carry him to his crate. I think it's adorable and I'm glad he started doing this.
He does not like being groomed either but will tolerate it most of the time. It's best to get him when he's a little sleepy otherwise he tries to roll over to keep me from brushing him. He's really good right after a bath though. he'll try to back away from me while he's being bathes but once I have him on the floor with a towel draped around him he is so quiet and limp like he's in a trance. I can dry him and clean his ears with no struggle but once I take the towel and walk away he slinks off then begins his rolling around, running and shaking.
