Fences and her lady parts
When we first brought Fences home, I noticed she didn't look "normal" in the genital region. I kept insisting to my boyfriend that she was different down there, but he thought I was being a perv. I haven't had a female puppy since I was 10 or younger so I figured maybe I was just being crazy.
Well about a week ago, I decided to look up female puppy genitalia on google ( awkward while doing so in front of your bf's mom) and found out what was wrong!
It turns out Fences has an inverted vulva. It doesn't seem like she has any issues as of yet, but I would like to know if any of you guys have advice as to what to do to make sure she is kept healthy and clean down there.
I read up online about waiting for her first heat cycle to see whether the swelling would correct the issue.
I really wanted her spayed as soon as possible, but it looks like that's out of the picture at least for now. Thank goodness Tomahawk is neutered!
I also clean her with baby wipes twice a day and check for any excessive licking or discharge, but I don't know what symptoms to look for other than those stated above.
I know that UTI's can get mighty expensive so I want to make sure I give her every preventative I can to help reduce her risk of getting sick. I know at some point she will get one, but an ounce of protection goes a long way!
I would put a picture up to see if anyone can confirm my suspicion, but maybe that's going overboard lol!

Did you get her from a registered breeder? They will more then likely offer to take her back, and refund your money or give you a new puppy. I'm assuming you're uber attached lol, but contact them and let them know, read over your contract and they may help you obtain information.

No, I actually got her off of craigslist. I saw the lady's ad wanting to give her away so my boyfriend and I decided that we would give her a loving home. It's a good thing we did because she ended up having tapeworms and giardia. She is happy and healthy now besides having the inverted vulva.
The woman we got her from told us she was the offspring of two corgis from Petland's. I'm sure this improper breeding resulted in her having this issue. I would never think about giving her up. I made a commitment to her and will stand by it until the day she passes on.
Thank you for the advice though. I really do appreciate it, and hopefully the next corgi we get will be from a reputable breeder so if a more serious health issue arises, we can have the opportunity to give it back if the health risks are too great.

Oooo Petland eh? I'm glad you guys found her and took her in!
We knew Lemmy had no eye when we got him, and our vet informed us that it may need surgery one day and suggested we bring him back to the breeder and I hugged Lemmy tight and said " no way".( I also didn't get him from a reputable breeder) I wouldn't give him up for the world.

My dogs have many weird issues including anal gland problems and sensitive stomache. And iv learned to just let them be in a way I can't worry to much. I still serve there very need. Many with uti and bladder infections you can do many things to treat and prevent these, such things as apple cider vinegar in there food or a little cranberry juice in there water. But don't do these till you notice anything. Just make sure you aren't having her hold her potty to long because this can cause infections. Let her lock hersel and clean herself. This is there natural way of keeping themselves clean. Make sure to get puppy wipes from the store these are meant for these things. Lots of water intake really makes a difference. Maybe if the skin is folded in that area make sure in hott weather she isn't getting hott spots and if so get hott spot treatment for dogs and it's cheap. There is always a way to treat dogs naturally but just let her be till you actually notice anything. Just make sure she is bathed and drinking lots of water. My dogs are weird but I'm there mom and I'm commited to there lives and needs.

Seanna has similar problems. She has an extra fold of skin over her vulva, which causes UTI's and vulvitis. The best thing we've found to help is to keep her shaved really well down there. We also use the baby wipes, but she is to the point where she hates that, so when I do her nails and trim her belly fur, I trim her hair way down. I was going monthly to the vet to have her shaved really well, but the last time they must have nicked her, and she ended up with a nasty infection--really bad. So I'm going to try just trimming her for frequently and see how that goes. I heard too (after she'd been spayed) that sometimes letting them go through a first heat would bring it out more, but I would have had mixed feelings on that anyway. When the surgeon fixed her ACL this last time, he looked at her really well when she was under, and felt that it probably did need to be fixed, but wanted to wait since we were doing the knee repair plus pulling a fractured tooth at the same time. Not sure when we'll deal with it. I hate to do it to her--

Fences HATES it when I wipe her down there, but lately I think she knows she will get it done regardless because she just lays there in defeat. She'll give me the eye afterwards, but I make sure to reward her once I'm done.
I know this is a stupid question regarding the shaving, but I honestly can't remember how a female's hair growth will look like down there. Right now she is still a puppy so she only has those wispy little hairs. Do you know roughly when more hair starts to grow? I can't for the life of me remember how females look down there, I've had male dogs for so long I guess I just forgot.
I heard about the surgery and I would have mixed feelings about it as well. I'm really hoping that letting her go through her first heat cycle will help correct her issue, but if not, then we may have to go the same route. It makes me feel bad for her because I know I wouldn't want someone poking around my lady bits with a scapel
Hopefully only good things come out of this situation. If you ever decide to do the surgery on Seanna, would you let me know so that I can get an idea about what Fences may expect?

You have good info here. Did you take her to the vet when you brought her home? The vet usually checks for all those things when you bring in a puppy for a first visit. Our vet was pleased to announce that Jack had two testicles! :-)
If you have not had her for her puppy wellness visit, please take her in and see what the vet recommends.

We took her in the next day we had her because of the whole tapeworm situation, while she was there we figured we would do a wellness exam to get it out of the way. I don't understand how they didn't catch it because it's really noticeable. Even I knew something was different just by looking at her. I honestly feel like a lot of vets in my area are a behind the times a bit. I need to find a vet that I can feel comfortable with because the ones I have gone to only left me feeling like I know more than they do.
I'm sure I won't be one of those clients the vet staff will be happy to see because I ask so many questions and demand a comprehensive explanation for the treatments they choose to do on my dogs. I'm not trying to be mean or rude, I just want to know the reasons behind poking and prodding my babies lol

My vet loves when I ask questions. Actually looks pleased and murmurs things like "You've been doing some research! We like that." But I know what you mean; some just have the "I'm the doctor, that's why" attitude.
I found mine by asking a woman who does a lot of rescue, and therefore knows every vet in the region.

Every vet I have gone to has that attitude with me. I look up everything they give my dogs before I decide to agree to give it to them. There have been times I wasn't comfortable and told them and they ended up telling me it will pretty much be my fault if my dogs become extremely ill or die.
I think I will see about what vets the rescues go to around here. Or I'll ask the trainer I went to for Tomahawk. She seemed to know her stuff lol
