Hello all!

I have a 3 year old, 25lb Corgi. She had an allergic reaction about 2 months ago and we can't figure out what caused it. (We think it's either her food or environmental allergies.) She hasn't had a reaction since, but since then, we changed her food. She is now on Wellness Simple. Her skin has calmed down but it still has a little pink tint to it. Someone told me that giving her one Fish Oil tablet will clear up her skin from the inside out and to give it to her in pill form or by squirting it on her food.

Does anyone else do this? Is one pill enough? To much?

I haven't really heard that much about it and I don't want to do any more damage for my girl.

Thanks!

we use fish oil at our breeder's recommendation. one capsule every other day until our puppy reaches 8 months, then we were told one a day.

so once a day should work for your girl.  you don't need a "special" or "pet" version, though.  any fish oil you grab at the local pharmacy or super market should work.

there's a thread on here as well about coconut oil, which a few have had promising results for, but i wouldn't suggest using both. pick one or the other.

I started using fish oil this past winter.  Max gets very dry skin in winter and between his hind legs gets very itchy and red. He chews at it.  I saw it at PetSmart...it's made by GNC, the company that makes the human vitamins.  He gets 1 capsule a day in his food and the itches stopped and the redness cleared up.  I do intend to take a look at the amount each capsule contains to see if I can just buy it at like Walgreen's which I am sure would be cheaper than PetSmart.

The bottle says it's suppose to help with normal shedding so I started Katie on it too and I have to admit that it seems like there isn't as much fur on the rugs even with the spring shedding.  Don't know how it will affect when they blow their coats tho.

My vets recommend fish oil all the time for skin allergies. Franklin gets 600 mg once a day. His coat is so soft and shiny and he has never (knock on wood) had any type of allergies and he doesn't shed.

Great! Thank you so much for the options! Vikki sheds like CRAZY so if this Fish Oil helps her stop itching AND stops her from shedding as much, I'd be one happy mama!!

Jeff has been getting one capsule in each meal (so twice a day). He was getting bored with his food and would let it sit there for a while before finally eating. I started cutting open the capsule and squirting the oil on his food, while also leaving the capsule in the bowl, and it's really helped all around. Jeff is excited to eat his food and his coat isn't dry anymore! We just buy the human capsules from our local grocery store.

I have had Oscar & Sam on fish oil capsules for years their coat & skin are in excellent condition i only give them the one I get for myself and Paul 1000 mg's 1 capsule daily never had any skin problems wharsoever!.

Good luck!.

Thanks for the comments about using the same capsules for the dogs as you do for yourself.  I figured they were the same but wanted to make sure, didn't want there to be something in the human one that could have a bad affect on dogs.

I would also guess that the human fish oil would be higher quality thus safer. There's more rules governing our supplements than animal ones.

you know, i hadn't thought about that, but you're probably right! also the markup. same mg and same quantity of fish oil we get for machete from the grocery store at petsmart for the "pet version" was about $10 less. seriously. that's ridiculous!

We give the liquid in Kaylee's food (~2tsp/day a couple days a week). She likes the taste though now her breath smells fishy. :-p I've noticed a good deal of improvement in her itching since she started on it this winter. We haven't changed her food at all either.

Hi Brianne,

The problem with fish oil is purity and quality, the FDA do not regulate supplements.

Most people know the benefit of Fish oil, so I'm not going to elborate, however it can also be a double-edged sword:

Yes, omega 3 can be a great anti-inflammatory when there is medical need, but it is also a great anticoagulant, causing unnecessary bleeding. Bad if your dog needs emergency surgery.

It can cause skin problem if your dog is allergic to fish & shellfish in the first place.

The in crease in oil consumption can upset stomach, causing heartburn (human can't tell) , loose stools.

It affects liver function, drops blood pressure (too low for some), making diabetes (blood sugar) harder to control, behavioral pendulum swing.

Over the counter drugs / supplement has its place, Please consult your vet and dosage recommendation.
