WHAT IS THIS??

Sorry for the caps, but I've been dealing with this for a while and it's gotten really just...bad.  Waffle's butt constantly and consistently smells like fish.  Sometimes it doesn't, and then other times it's so overpowering.  ... WHY?  He doesn't appear to have any poo stuck to his butt... and if he did, wouldn't it smell like poo? Haha.  D:

Bad drawing coz my senses are overpowered by fish smell.

It has to do with his anal glands. They may need to be emptied you can google how to do it yourself or stop by your vets and they can do it for you. I think my vet charges 15.00 dollars for that service.
Seriously? D: Aw man! Thanks. -puts on HazMat suit-
Here's an article for you about fishbutt lol

If you google "dogs butt smells like fish", lots of informative articles come up. Sorry for you!! Frosty's butt stinks a lot too, but that's because he always has stinky gas. Good luck (I would recommend paying somebody else to do it by the way, it is safer to have a professional express the glands)!
its the anal glands. DO NOT EXPRESS THEM YOURSELF! You can do some serious damage if you don't know what you are doing. Take him to a groomer or vet to have it done and if you would like to do it yourself in the future they can show you how. Its disgusting and stinky and totally worth it to pay somebody to do it for you!
Al or Gwynn get fishbutt only occasionally, usually in the car, only when riding in the backseat with an unfamiliar human (like, driving to a trailhead for a hike). I think it has something to do with nervousness. Either they never do this when they're back there alone, or I never notice it.
LOL i love the drawing! i am sorry i dont have any advice but i love when people on her draw little cartoons in there topics :)
I would definitely have your vet look at him if you have any concerns at all about the anal glands. My mom's border collie/black lab mix got obstructed anal glands and they didn't realize until it was really advanced with infection, because it didn't show anything when they looked at it. It involved a lot of medication and trips to the vet for expression and lots of pain for poor Oreo before she was better. Therefore I do not recommend waiting for things to get bad, please have a professional check it out ASAP.
I agree completely that no matter how good a food looks on paper, if the dogs don't do well on it, it's time for a different food! I switched mine to a lamb-based food because Jack always had softer stools on chicken. Lamb would not be my first protein choice, but he does well on it and they both have nice firm stools on it. Look good, gorgeous coats, good muscle tone, so I am happy.
Thanks for the replies everyone. This is obviously my worst nightmare, haha! He's pretty good about emptying his glands but I guess sometimes he doesn't... his stool is pretty soft usually, so I think I will start finding ways to toughen it up so this happens less often. We're going to finish this food no matter what because it cost me an arm and a leg. I didn't think having soft stools was bad... I'm envious, actually. (TMI? Probably.) I'll pay closer attention to his pooping habits and if anything happens, you'll all probably find out. This is one aspect of doggy owning that I had no idea about. :P
My Border Collie has to have his done once a year.. It is the anal glands. The vet can do it. After he does make sure that you bring something for hem to sit on in your car. It will be all over hem and you will have to give him a bath. Then after that give him baby carrots once a day will help out. I do a little hand full of them every morning..
You could try adding a tablespoon or two of pumpkin (plain canned pumpkin, not the spiced stuff) to his food and see if that helps firm up his stool.
Thanks for posting this, you've solved one of the mysteries I was wondering about a while back! It only happened once, and hasn't happened since, but I'm glad to know that a) we weren't imagining it and b) there's a solution if it happens again!

Also, your illustration is fantastic, and sums it up perfectly!!
