Good dog food for senior Corgis?
I have Teddy a 13+ year old Corgi who has always been on grain-free (TOTW or Canidea) food but I have noticed that lately he will throw up his food(maybe 3 times a week) a few hours after eating it. I am worried that he is not getting enough nutrition when he does this. For now I have started adding 1/4 cup brown rice with an egg mixed in, I decreased his dry and add this mixture but would like to find some food that I don't need to do this. I almost think this food is too hard but don't want to give him wet food. He also has very few teeth left after having more than 16 pulled a few years ago.
Any ideas would be great. Thanks!

Jane...I use Blue Weight Control for Katie who is 12, Max also did well on it but it's not grain free. Could you soften the dry with a little warm water and maybe add some non-fat cottage cheese and maybe some canned green beans (no or low salt) to help add nutrients? I use both of those along with canned fat free chicken with the kibble for my guys. I decreased the kibble also to allow for those things. I may make it easier for his tummy to digest since he can't really crunch up hard kibble and the other stuff will add extra nutrients. And just in case you are wondering my vet is happy with what I have been feeding them all for a very long time.
I hope you can find the right solution for Teddy.

Thank-you Linda, I don't really care for Teddy if it's grain-free or not. I always add warm water to my Corgi's food but to soften it takes a LONG time to soak up but I do it to make sure they get enough water . I think his tummy just can't take it because he can't chew? I wonder what would happen if I put it in my food processor and then added the warm water???? I have started adding pumpkin or green beans to their food or give the green beans for healthy snack...they all love it and it's so easy!
I wonder if senior food is the same hardness? I just feel I he might be missing some essential that an older Corgi needs?

Might be able to just let it soak in some warm water for ten or fifteen minutes. Then you wouldn't have to dirty up the food processor.

Definitely something with a very small kibble that wouldn't take so long to digest in his tummy. I looked at the Blue Senior dog good and they have several formulas with smaller kibble. I even looked at the new Purina for senior dogs they are advertising so heavily...no thanks, first ingredient was yellow corn meal. I don't do grain free but If there is gonna be corn it better be near the bottom of the list. That's the hardest stuff for them to digest even for a young dog.

We have a great pet store here so I'll check what they have and just try a small bag of the senior food. 3 dogs and 2 different food...hubby will really be happy when he has to feed them...haha!

Well...I soaked Teddy's food this AM and it looked good so we'll see if that works. It would seem be nice not to have 3 different dog foods for 3 different dogs. Thanks for all the advice.

I am softening Jack's food post-extraction and I found that if I use hot water and cover it, it softens completely within 10 or 15 minutes.
You also might try feeding him smaller portions more often, if your schedule allows.

I tried several different mixtures and Teddy still had issues so one day I decided to try a different food option. After spending so much time in the store I chose sensitive stomach food and now Teddy is getting 1/2 and 1/2 with no more throwing up. Since I like his old food and that is what Sage eats I will continue to mix his as I am now. I am so glad that this is working. Thanks everyone for your ideas!
