Have you ever learned the perfect name for your corgi much too late?
Has the perfect name for your dog appear far too late?
I don't know about you but I spent a good amount of time thinking about my dog's name. To be honest, I though it was kinda cute but was still lacking. Unfortunately it wasn't until yesterday that the perfect name fell into my lap. I went with my friend to pick up his older sister from a friend's house and when I told her my dog's name (Kara came with us) she misheard and said "Carrot? Carrot is a cute name. What? Kara? Nope, I'm going to call you Carrot from now on."
Perfect name too late. I'm still traumatized from the ordeal. Share my pain and tell me yours.

I had the opposite problem. Franklin was already named when I got him. I bought him at 5 weeks old and had 3 1/2 weeks of e-mails, pictures, and videos from the breeder to try to find his perfect name and really nothing matched his personality better than the name Franklin, so it stuck. I still can't think of a better name for him! Everybody loves his name and says it totally fits him, but unfortunately I can't even take credit for naming my own dog! Although I did get to pick is AKC name so I guess that's something right?

Yup....I did this with Livvy, had her name tags and everything before I got her and then Gwenneth just wasn't right for her . Her name tags still say Gwenneth but she is Olivia or Livyy Lou as I call her. I now suggest to my puppies new owners to take a few days and see what fits the pup:) I also have name my pups and several of them have kept their names.

I picked Waffle's name years before I even thought of actually getting a dog, nonetheless a Corgi. haha. But, I had a similar dilemma with his registered name. He was going to be Mistah Mick (his name before I adopted him) because I didn't care one way or another. I know if I hadn't been lazy, I would regret it seriously. Now he has a great registered name that I'm proud of!

Go ahead and change Kara to Carrot! The reality is that a dog's name is just a command that means to them, "look at me" or "come to where I am." They have no emotional attachment to the name. I've changed my dogs name before, even one that was four years old, and none seemed to care a wit. On the other hand, when I adopted my second Corgi, "Tinsel," back in '02, I wanted to change her name because it sounded a bit too "girlie" for a single guy's dog (silly me). But the name "Tinsel" fit her bright personality so perfectly that Tinsel she stayed.
I think Carrot is a fine name and I love Franklin and Waffle too. All great names for happy Corgis.

I don't see the problem. Carrot sounds so much like Kara that you can just switch. I rescued a Corgi and always had my heart set on naming my first Corgi, Gorki, because I thought that Corgis were adorably gawky. My rescue was named Corky. It was a no-brainer. We called Corky, Gorki, and he never knew the difference. If you love the name Carrot, I bet Kara will answer to Carrot within a day or two.

I always tell new adopters that they can change any dog's name. I changed Oreo to Oliver when he was 5, and it only took 3 weeks to be complete. In fact, in some cases, we recommend a change. The old name may have a stressful, negative connection to the dog. It may be a name given to him in the shelter, or a name that was connected with abuse, or bad habits. So starting fresh with a new name can help the dog settle in, and learn new ways to do things.
On the other hand, my Springer Spaniel Monty was a perfect gentleman. At the dog park, every dog wanted to make him their, well, ... bitch. And he never complained. My boys and I finally bought him a purple collar like the TelleTubby Tinky Wink, cuz he was just, you know, like that. Not that there's anything wrong with that. So when we saw the movie "The Three Amigos" (Steve Martin, Martin Short, Chevy Chase), we fell in love with the song "My Little Buttercup." And Monty became our little Buttercup after that..

We chose Twinkie's name before we got her. We are lucky that it fits her so well. I think you should absolutely call her Carrot now. She will hardly know the difference. It is a very cute name!
